one of those multiple parking stacking thing-a-ma-jig. popular in japan due to lack of parking space. didn't know they had them in the usa. i'm surprised the platform buckled, it should have been able to handle the weight.

I would be on the phone with my insurace company, and a lawyer in 2 seconds. I have to say I am amazed that the c pillar of the GS gave out. I am a little disappointed . You ca tell though that te GS was the car on the very top level. Its not the fault of the car or the owner. Its the fault of the ghetto parking lot owner who keep using old and rusted lifts. This is a NYC parking lot. If anyone has seen the lifts in person I think you would tell the guy parking your car to NOT put the car on the lift

If you consider that the car was placed at the very top of the lift dont think its that surprising that the C pillar gave out. Lets give Lexus a little credit

it didn't fall upside down from the top level.
this car isn't as rigid as it should be.

I'm not sure if any car would be designed to be dropped on its roof from a height...survive a rollover, sure, but that's when all 6 pillars are sharing the load, and it wouldn't be coming down from such an altitude. In this particular case all of the force was borne by the a-pillars initially.

but the C pillar buckled after hitting that rangerover. sounds pretty weak to me.
recently the IIHS did the SUV roof strength test, and it takes 20 tons of force to crumple a roof.
This lexus couldn't have possibly had 20 tons of force on that C pillar against that rangerover.

You wouldn't need to feed a whole 20 tons into that single pillar...just more than 3 tons (to use the SUV analogy). I think car crashes can be a little bit inconsistent in that way...some accidents you shake your head and wonder how anyone walked away at all, other accidents with the same model car the whole thing is cut in half or something.
It's kinda like a crash test at 40mph against a flat wall, most cars will hold up ok, but crash into a pole at 40mph and it'll make a much bigger mess cos of the load being fed into a point, rather than spread across an area.
