actually the Amg Mercedes benz's are a lot more reliable than the regular benz's. The engines are made in a different plant than the regular ones; and My brother who had a S55 and his G55 has never had a problem with them at all. He was about to get a new CL63 but said the interior looked cheap; so he passed on it.
My favorite car is the s63!!!!

The problem with MBs is not their engines, it's the electronics and other chassic related bits. I have had my share of issues with my wife's 2 S500s. Both had thousands of dollars of warranty work and the GL has been pretty reliable but went in last week because of a noisy idler pulley. That said, quality is much much better on the new generation of MBs and it really shows. With the exception of the pulley, the car has been rock solid (knock on wood).
My GS has not had any problems but the dash rattle is something I fear will never go away, so it's not perfect either.
The S63 is still calling out to me but I have to defer to the sensible side in me and say that it's not a great idea. My wife still fully supports the idea but I just can't get myself to do it. We may end up getting an S550 with the sport package anyways.
In the meantime, I will just have to suffer with the GS.

The new MB's have had pretty decent initial quality reviews but in about 3 years I bet the electronics and body start falling apart. I had had over $10,000 warranty work both on my E and S that is why I came to Lexus. Also the service is much better. I do like how the MB rides and handles but it just wasn't worth the headache of going into service almost once every month or not having the car for weeks at a time while the car is still depreciating. Unless Lexus quality heads downward I won't be back to MB.
When you get tempted just remember that your wife might ask you to trade in your 997 that should stop you cold.

I like the coffee!! LOL Actually have only been to Lexus service 3 times and and 2 of the times they gave me a courtesy car on the spot. While at MB I have to call ahead 2 weeks to get a appointment and a courtesy car. Not only that I had 2 MB's at the same time so I was at the MB service all the time just haggling for good will or demanding that the damn car be fixed the first time I bring it in. Sitting in the service area at MB is pretty funny because I usually ask others what their car is in for and at the end of the conversation usually there is a small group of us cursing out our cars for alway breaking down. Also notice a difference in buying habits of foreigners compared to local people. Foreigners no matter how much trouble the car has caused them will buy another MB while people raised in North America most often that not will say that it is the last one they will buy.

The Accord has always been my 1st choice in long distance commute cars. I have gone 3x to buy one and they never have the car I want in stock and they could not find one in CA for me. 4 door EX V6 or 4cyl with nav, leather and 6 speed. I guess the 6 speed is the kicker. They can easily get an LX with 6 speed but for some reason the EX is hard to get. After test driving the car with a 6 speed, there is no way I would ever get an auto. I even considered an Acura TSX but the dealership in my town is crappy and I have vowed to never step foot in it again.

I was tying to discredit mechanical quality of MB, not the luck I was having with the GS.
But past week would be my last irregualr visit to the service department, somehow they managed to taken care the issues I was having...
For some reason, I never bring in my LS in except the regular service.
But with the GS, I was having issues with usual... RATTLES and pulling...

2001 S500 in my house. Only 30,000 miles on the car in 6-7 years. Like 2thfixer said, these cars have had some electronic issues. For a car that cost almost 80k and is rarely driven, it's disappointing to find this many issues with the benz.

Why not the E63 ? Same engine..
OR C63 ? AMG C-Class gets the big engine this year.. a slightly de-tuned S/E63 engine but rumors already circulating that it will be somewhat easy to 're-tune' to the 507hp
The wife wants to get out of the RX so i'm trying to get her to want the GS so i can get a C63 if i don't get the IS-F .. getting that power itch again The IS-F is looking pretty sweet.. http://youtube.com/watch?v=OGzxddyrwZk
Driving an IS now while Lex of Dayton installs my springs (finally got around to it!), and i think i can deal with a little smaller car to get the 400+hp
