Probably nothing to worry about. The engines and exhaust are sprayed with a protective coating for the boatride over seas. It is normal for this to burn off during the break in period.

Default Burning smell

I have 06 GS 300 AWD and had this burning smell as well in Febuary it took them three months to figure out the problem the removed the engine and transmission. It was an oil leak that was dripping on two some exhaust shield. I posted a message about it in march titles engine oil leak i took some pics as well. The smell I had was coming in from the vents and you could see smoke from under the hood I was trying to get lexus to buy back the vehicle however they refused. They ended up changing all the seals and gaskets in the engine. They said it was a faulty seal placed by the manufacturer.. go figure. Dr. SUd

Default hmm...what's that smell......

heh heh.

I test drove a BMW 550i over the weekend....and, gee wiz, there was that same burning smell.

(It is likely the clutch and/or (other parts of) transmission and the engine working themselves in. usually this only happens if you *floor it*....which, of course.....you sorta have to do in these cars.)

That may not be it though--so recommend you ask a friend who knows cars if you can repeat the smell. If not, drive it to your dealer and make sure you step on it before you get there.

IMHO, a burning smell in a new car is not normal, and you should worry!

I've owned 8 new cars in the last 10 years, and none have ever had a burning smell.

I have owned quite a few new cars and driven a little more in the past 15 years and every one of them had what could be considered a burning smell when they were new. In fact, my GS430 still has a slight trace of that smell when it is parked in the garage, and it has 2000 miles. I would think that a car with 214 miles would wreak of the scent.

It is due to grease on metal surfaces that get hot, such as the engine, transmission, exhaust, and most notably the catalytic converter. The grease will soon get burnt off.

Now that smell is very different from burnt oil, which will generate visible smoke as well.
