just get 91. if you can afford the car you can afford the gas. overall using 91 you will spend like 200 bucks more a yr?

i use premium. i make myself feel better about paying for premium by getting gas at costco their premium price is cheaper than the regular 87 gas at my local gas station.

I really appreciate your inputs on this thread. Thanks. And I do use the premium on my car.
About if I can afford my recent purchase, well let's see.... I have a mortgage , 2 kids going to private school , and my business is in limbo ....I'm still crunching the numbers. But hey, we need to splurge sometime and treat ourselves... in my case a 3gen GS300. Right?
Thanks for the inputs and have a good day.

93 octane is considered premium here in NC
you California guys never talk about 93 octane, which is what we refer to as premium here in north carolina. we're probably in a retarded state, and 93 is causing extra emissions or something...i'm wondering if it's even available in CA.
anyway, we have 87, 91 and 93 available at all pumps. so when Lexus sez "premium", i go for the 93 octane. always have since '92. lotta $$ for premium gas, and i guess i don't really reap any benefits except for the feeling that i'm keeping my engines as clean as possible.
back when i wuz buyin' bimmers in the 80's, every time i bought a new one the dealer gave me a case of gas additive. i don't know if it was an octane booster or some sort of cleaner...which i was supposed to pour in with each tank of gas. and that was on top of the 93 octane which was required. i always did it like they instructed...and continued to buy and use that additive until i bought my first lex SC300 in '92.
in summary, maybe i've been a sucker for decades...but becuz i buy my cars and don't lease, i don't want engine probs, i continue to pay top dollar for gas...and always go for premium.

I remember back in the mid to late 80's, there was a company called "trick" that sold gas for racing purposes here in southern california ( valley ). I think their octane rating was somewhere in the high 90's to 100's. Don't know if they are still in business.
Friends told me to use their gas to increase 0-60 times. Never did. Why? Drove a 1987 nissan sentra automatic, vinyl seats with sheepskin covers, a whopping 70 horsepower without fuel injection.

My brother just bought a 05' G35 and the manual says to use Premium.
He talked to one of the mechanics and was told to just us the mid-grade gas here
in So. Cal, ie 89 Octane. The mechanic says the car is actually tuned for 89 octane
and anything higher is just a was of money. They say use Premium because they just
want people to put 89 octane or more. As you can see, Premium varies from state to
state.

Premium Fuel Requirement
Hey GSers,
I tried to search for this specific topic but couldnt find anything like it. I've never owned the GS model before so excuse me for my lack of knowledge, but in getting the GS350, I was a bit surprised that this particular car has a "Premium Only Fuel" Requirement. (At least that's what it says inside the gas cover) Has the GS line always had this requirement? My RX can take unleaded fuel of any grade, but I didn't know this model requires only premium fuel....I've only seen this requirement in European cars before like Benz's..

i believe all lexus "recommend" premium gas, including the RX and the GS350. didn't hear about them making it a MUST for gs350
from my understanding, with the gs350, you can put in regular no problem. the ecu will retard the timing to match the octane level. you will lose some power for sure. and given the extremely high compression ratio on the 350 engine, it's very likely that you will get pinging, especially you are in cali where gas aren't all that good imho.
imho, it's just 20 cents a gallon more between regular and premium....

The GS350 has a high compression high output engine. Running premium is pretty much a must. My friend ran 89 octane in his IS350(same motor as GS350) one time and it was knocking a bit. It was on a road trip, and he was waaay low on empty. There were no other gas stations around and it just so happened that the gas station's premium pump was busted.
In the RX, the engine is a lower compression normal output motor. No problem running regular in those.
