Default Aftermarket subwoofer...??

i have read that the ML system w/ the new GS has a 10'' subwoofer..for the owners who currently own a GS, does it look as if there is sufficiant space to put in an aftermarket subwoofer? Or would it have to be placed in the trunk w/ a custom enclosure?

Default In a way the trunk is the ML's Sub enclosure

This is not a roomy trunk to begin with. It is deep. The 10" sub is in the traditional center of the parcel shelf and the Magnet area is not massive but smaller than a normal woofer. I'm not sure of the impedance or the crossover but the ML supplies a total of 330 Watts. At full volume it is pretty impressive for an OEM system but won't rattle the street as you drive by.

The ML sub has 2 voice coils, each driven by a 50w amp, thus the 100w rating. So you'd need not only a new sub if you plan to replace the existing 10" driver with another one, but an amp as well.

Might be old news now, but I'd like to revise my previous post. While preparing to install a separate subwoofer amplifier, I found that the ML sub is actually a single voice coil (not 2), and measures 12 ohms (DC). The standard sub seems to be a dual voice coils design, each being 2.5 ohms according to the manual. If the new amp fails to improve the results as I intend, then I'll look into replacing the 10" driver. But that's a much bigger job--have to remove the back seats and all the interior trim around them!

My mission for the new amp is not really to get more bass loudness, but less bass muddiness. The Kicker amplifier allows me to have a sub gain control up front, and also has a 40 Hz equalizer to help keep the bottom octave audible when the midbass gain gets reduced (by returning the ML's bass control back down to "0").

i am wondering
does this mean that an aftermarket speaker would have sufficent enough room to fit?
or would there need to be some fabrication that needs to be takin place?
would a jl w7 magnet be too large to fit into the space provided?

The issue of a deep woofer (huge magnet) is twofold. If you want to drop it in from the top (the same way the current woofer is mounted), then you have to be sure it will clear the rear window during installation. If that turns out to be a problem, it could be bolted in from underneath. That only makes intrusion into the trunk a little worse, adding to the next problem. Inside the trunk, the flexible liner passes just below the existing woofer's magnet, so you'd have to either leave it out (comes out without any tools), or cut a clearance hole in it.

I did with high hopes only to find out that the two subs are 12 inch & 13.5 inch. Also they're not due out till the 3rd quarter of 07. I an thinking about mounting a Polk SR104 sub and have a box build hanging off the rear deck which of course will add more weight. How strong is our rear deck?

Does anyone have any experience with Alumapro's Alchemy Free Air sub? If so does it have more out put then ML 10? Does play deeper? Also if DrexLex is right and our sub in the 07 GS is 12 ohms what effect would that have on the amp is I put a 4ohm driver on it?
