GS300 Charcoal Canister
Hello,
I was curious if anyone else has had problems with the charcoal canister on their GS. Here is the story:
I bought the car on 10-1-2001, with 43K mils on it. Th 1st check engine light came on 12-27-2001, at 48K. Park Place Lexus here in Dallas replacd the charcoal canister, # 7774030271 under warranty.
The check engine light came on again on 10-25-02 at 59K, and the ECU was replaced due to "false check engine lights"
This past weekend, the check engine light came on again. The car now has 72K miles, and is out of warranty. I took the car to Davenport Motor Company, an independant service center that specializes in Lexus cars, and they spent 4 hours diagnosing the check engine light, and traced it back (finally) to a leaking charcoal canister. The reason they spent so much time checking the codes is because they thought there was no way the canister could be bad again, since I had it replaced less than 2 years ago. They removed the canister, and pressure tested it, and it is in fact leaking. They show a new part # for the canister of 7774030210, and quoted me $525 for the part.
I guess I have 2 questions.
1 - did Lexus issue a "recall" or Service Bulletin for the part change on the canister due to defectives?
If not, should I argue that it failed prematurely, and try and get it at a discounted rate?
2 - has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what was your resolution?
I don't mind paying for parts and service, but this situation seems a bit fishy to me.
Thanks,
David

What is a charcoal cannister? I even never heard of it. I also have a 99 GS300 (87k)
and did recall my check engine light coming on at 60K. It went away after that and I brought
it to the dealer. Since it didn't come back on again, they didn't spend too much time to detect
it. It hasn't been back on since then. Around 70k, my throttle accelerator and starter went out and
that was when the check engine came back again. I had it replaced and no check engine
light so far.

Can anyone verify this?
I have a call in to Steve at Carson, but he hasn't called me back yet. I'll be sure and ask him.
Thanks again!

the light did come on after I had filled the car with gas, but I'm not one to overfill the tank. Once it hits cut off, I am done. Interesting that I have never heard overfilling your tank causes problems.
either way, thanks for the link and the info

Talked with Bobby at Carson, and he verified that it will be covered under the 80K emissions warranty!
Woo hoo!
I'll be taking it to my dealer tomorrow
Thanks,
David
