Default Squeak in steering wheel.

When I put the key in and the wheel goes to its preset position it makes a loud noise. The noise is not a noise where it sounds lilke the motor is going out but more like one where it sounds like it needs to be oiled. A little metal on metal sound. Anyone know how to fix this?

That happens to me when the weather is hot / humid. Other than that, there is no noise.

That must be it then!! It has been like 100+ here for the last several weeks. It just started here recently since it has been so humid and hot.

Thanks DIESELMAN63

anti-seize the threaded rods for tilt/telescopic function......you'll have to disassemble the steering column covers. to access..

I wrote something about this last year. Yeah, when it gets hot/humid, the steering wheel squeaks. It's actually quite embarrassing when it happens in public.

So far, not much can be done. If anyone has a fix, please post!

Thanks!

Mine was doign the same thing when it was hot in the car. I mentioned it when it was in for the 60,000 mile service last week, and the repair invoice shows that they "lubricated gears in steering column." It seems to have fixed the problem.

I had this happen to me when I had the 98 GS4, they relubed the steering assembly motor and adjusted pins. I think I posted about this on the old CL board for those that remember those days. Hot weather climates will get this problem more often than those up north, as I had this happen when I took my car from NY to Miami. Free under warranty and there may even be a TSB on it, though I am not sure.
