Default Purchase 98 or 99 GS 400 nakim or NAV?

Ok it looks like I am going to sell my 540 sport and give the gs400 a try. Hope it lives up to it's image as very reliable.

In choosing what to get I thought I might tap the board to get the low down.

On 98 /99 GS 400 does the Navigation system have any trip computer stuff (as found on my BMW)? Stuff like avg miles per gallon, avg speed, miles left to empty ect? I am told non nav 98/99 GS400's do not have any of these items...

If you were buying today would you buy with NAV or would you look for Naki stereo instead (I am not going to modify the stereo either way). I have not heard the Nakim but I think the stock (Pioneer) sounds good.

Advice and wisdom appreciated.

If I were re-buying my GS I'd get one with Nav. You can upgrade the speakers, sub and amp fairly easily and get much better sound.

Nakamichi DOES sound incrementally better, but an upgrade set of speakers, sub, amp blows it away.

I'll let the GS guys with nav chip on your trip computer questions. My 98 LS400 with Nav does all those things you mention, and I'd assume the GS does too but it might be different.

Why are u getting rid of the BMW? What kind of problems are you having?

Pioneer system sounds very good, NAK sounds the best, but it really does not matter if you are going to change out the setup anyway. I have the pioneer, kept the head unit and upgraded all the speakers and sub and tweeters. Sounds amazing

I do not think any of the GS comes with a trip computer that gives you that kind of info. I could be wrong.
The NAV is great and I wish I had picked up a GS with NAV which I now regret. But hey, I still got the mica blue which was very important to me at the time.

You will be dissappointed with the handeling on the stock GS vs BMW. But you can easily change all that. The GS suspension can be modded up very quickly to out handle a 540 sport and on par with the M5. With the Lexus reliability to match....this is really the way to go.

Good night BMW .......HEELLLOOO LEXUS!!

DrewGS4-

540 is a fantastic car....especially with the 6 speed. Mine has 68k and all is well. I tend to keep cars up too 175k. Had a Mercedes 300e with 175k prior to 540...wife has an E320 wagon that is up too 90k currently. With the Mercedes and other BMW's in the past they tend to have things that need to be fixed (my wifes E320 needs some A/C work that will cost $1,500 to 2,500. That stuff kills me.

Net Net is I like nice cars but I am cheap...I like to pay for them and then change tires, brakes ect and not fork out additional $$$.

On the handling front....GS400 is very soft, BUT I hooked up with 1SICKLEX and he showed me what can be done for a couple of thousand dollars sways, springs, shocks ect (which I should have left over after selling 540 and buying GS400)

Let me know if you know anyone looking for a black/tan 540 six speed with under 70k miles

KA

Any love on NAV info for GS400 98/99 would be appreciated.

Not sure if this will help, but I have a 2000 GS400 with Nav and it has all the mileage info that you stated, not sure about the miles left to empty though. I don't recall seeing that one. I think nav on 98-00 models should be the same.

I have a '98 GS400 w/Nav..It has all of the trip functions you mentioned.

I really like the Nav., but you'll find that it is a litlle harder to find one with Nav when you start your search; I have found them to be much more rare.

since youre not going to upgrade, get the nakim. unless you actually rely on the nav, in which case you wouldnt be asking.

Trip Information includes: running time, distance after refueling, average speed, current MPG, average MPG, MPG after refueling....
I have Bose systems in my Nissan and Acura and the standard Lexus system sounds better. The retail price for the Nakamichi Audio System packet was $6015 and the Navigation Package was $7065 for 99.
I would buy a GS with Navigation package if possible because the standard sound system is fine.

Miles left to empty is available as well. Look carefully..you'll find it...actually i think its on the main menu screen right on top. Cool feature.

I'd go for the ES 250, that thing is bling-blinging and very affordable. Just my 2 cents.

If you purchase a good palm pilot then your navigation problem is solved. And I've heard that those sparkmatic stereo systems are the shiznit. That should complete your ES250 mods and have all the chicks chasing you down the street.

A couple of my coworkers had the gps add on for the palm pilot. I would say, pass!

Now, one of the Garmin GPS handhelds would be fine.
