Should I upgrade my 97 GS300 (JZS160) to 2000 model?
Hey guys,
In the past few days I've been thinking it might be worth upgrading my current 97 GS to a 2000 model (facelifted). My GS has a few things that would need looking into (and potentially $$$)
Pros of my car
- Its very good condition body wise
- It's white :P
- Has a good stereo and a few minor mods (which I'd probably swap over anyway)
- I know its history
- Only 155km (~95k miles)
Cons
- Trans is a little bit odd when its cold. Under mid throttle it seems to cut power when shifting between first and second, and second and third gear. Its fine when its warm though
- Leak from cam seal, would require timing belt off to fix
- Slight crack or leak in a header runner
- Slight brake fluid leak, no idea where its from
- HVAC servos are a bit iffy sometimes
- Drivers door lock is pretty average
Pros of the newer GS
- Newer so better brake booster etc
- BLACK LEATHER
- Looks pretty tidy from pictures
- It's pretty cheap. $6000 AUD
- Timing belt apparently done recently
Cons
- 165km (about 100k miles) so not a lot more, only about 6 months of driving
- Silver (I mean silver isn't bad, but I love white)
- a few minor marks
- It has a spoiler, which isn't bad but I'd probably get rid of it anyway
- I'd have to fly down to look at it
- No history of ball joints done
I'm sure there's some other factors in it, but I really can't decide if its worth it. My car has had a bit of work done to it - LBJ, T Belt + w/pump, a few bushes replaced.
When I was looking, I wanted the facelift GS but they're hard to find. I REALLY like the black leather, too.

That's a tough one but if you can have a mechanic inspect it and ensure that it's in much better shape then your current vehicle then I'd say go for it. As I always say, trust your intuition. you'll know when you've found the right one. Personally, I'd wait for something local to pop up..
