Smell of fuel near around gas cap
Hey everyone I started to notice after I drive I can smell a bit of gas from my gas cap as if vapors were escaping from the cap. It only happens after I drive, is this a sign of a failing gas cap?

Mine was doing that as well. Got a new cap, still got the gas smell. Ended up being the fuel filler neck hose that connects to the tank. It had a split in the line causing the gas smell.

well thats cause the problem isnt going to fix itself, its been 22 days since you started this thread, stop waiting on people to spoonfed you a solution. start with the basics, go to autozone and get a cheap gas cap or order a OEM if thats what you want, if that doesnt fix it then start looking at a few other things. i would think immediately a bad charcoal canister or a VSV valve but you said no CEL so maybe not

So I dropped my car off at my local lexus specialist (very reputable shop in my area) for a unrelated issue (getting new caster arms and radiator installed) but I had mentioned the smell of fuel. I explained to him that the smell is only near the gas cap door and only after I drive. He said that it was the evap system releasing the vapors and it is working as intended. Does this sound right to you guys or should i get a 2nd opinion? I guess it sorta makes sense since I didn't see any improvement when I swapped the gas caps.

no CEL lights at all. I'm still on the stant gas cap that I bought for $6 lol, my oem gas cap comes in the mail on thursday so I'll swap that out and report back than. I'll also bring it up to my mechanic one more time when I pick up my car to clear up any misunderstanding that he may have had when I explained the situation the first time.

So I got my car back yesterday and my trusted lexus mechanic explained that everything is working as intended. He said there's some type of filter below the filler hose that gets soaked if the gas gets topped off and that turns into vapors when I drive. Those vapors are than released after the car is shut off. He said if there was any type of fuel leak big or small I would get a CEL light and until than he told me to just keep on trucking. I'm not happy with that diagnosis, if the smell stays after I swap in my oem gas cap I'll go get a 2nd opinion.

I just got my OEM gas cap in the mail right now but before installing it I took a look at my old oem one and noticed there was a crack in the sealing that I didn't notice before. I installed the new oem gas cap and went for a quick spin.. no more gas smell.. I think this may have solved my issue. I also took a look at the stant $6 gas cap and the sealing part was not as thick as the oem gas cap.

cool, glad that worked out for you. OEM most of the time is the way to go IMHO
