When is an oil leak a problem?
Hello, a question for the experts. This is similar to the question posed in this thread but as this concerns a GS430 I thought I'd post here.
I recently had my oil changed and was apprised of an oil leak that the mechanic suspected (but could not prove, without cleaning the area and following up) on the last oil change, six months ago. Seen this weekend with the car on a lift, there's wetness on the underside of the car that's obviously oil. I've never had the oil light come on, and I've not seen any spots on the driveway. The mechanic suggested I might have the car steam cleaned and brought back, as he thinks the leak is deeper than some issue with the oil pan. He also said that the issue is itself not one that demands immediate attention, and that it might be the sort of thing I can live with, so long as I'm vigilant about checking the dipstick.
Question for the forum: Is this something worth going through the trouble for investigating, or is it something to 'live with'? Any advice is much appreciated.

After further searching I have also found this thread, and also this one, which discuss some of the risks.

The only oil leak problems I've had with my 2GS4 were my valve cover gaskets (done at 180k) and the dipstick o-ring (which I will have done in a month or so at my usual service interval at 225k). It's mainly an annoyance as opposed to a problem. I just keep tabs on the oil level until I can take the car in for service.

Thanks. Mechanic, a reputable shop favored on this board, recommended I do the steam clean thing, which I did (before reading on this board about how that can be detrimental) and then had the leak diagnosed: oil filter gasket/housing. Had it fixed in less than an hour at the shop. Hopefully that stops the leaks.
