Default Which GS is the most reliable?

The 300, 400 or 430 models? I don't care about speed, just reliability.

i think they are all equally reliable... it wasn't anything about the motor that was different... our small quirks are shared within the chassis...

Both are reliable, but when I bought my '99 GS400 about 17 years ago I knew it had a version of the 1UZ-FE motor used in the LS400...and those run forever properly maintained. I have 219,000+ miles on mine now and a friend of mine at work had an '01 LX 470 with 306,000+ miles (pretty much the same motor). He eventually traded his in because his kids went to college.

Do all 2GS models have the same transmission? And if not, is one more reliable than the other in terms of transmission? (Just asking for my own edification.)

I think I read once on the boards that all 2GS models use the A650E automatic transmission? Not sure. You can Google it and it might tell you. At any rate, they are very reliable. In 17 years I've never had a problem out of my transmission. Changed the AT fluid at 100,000 miles a few years ago and never had an issue (probably need to do that again).

How about older GS? Like a 2000-2005 gs300?

Yes, the A650E is the transmission used in the 2GS (1998-2005).

Lets be honest. At the youngest these cars are 11 years old. They are all going to have issues unless your intend to buy one that has competently redone. Even then its no guarantee.
Properly taken care of the drive train on these cars is outstanding. The electrical componets on the other had at there ages can come into issue. (door lock, sensors of ever nature, and abs units on pre 2001 models).
If your looking to buy one of there for reliability and lack on required maintenance I really would recommend another car. Not that I don't love mine. But the amount of time and money I have put into it could have bought a slightly used IS-F.
If you love to tinker and build your ride however you want these cars have plenty of support.

GS300 has the best support for performance, that being its a 2jz and you can find more stand alone engine management. Some of which is plug and play.
GS430 is second best for performance since SRT make a supercharger for it still. Plus it has the better brake booster.
GS400 the Original bad boy. Harder to find performance parts for the engine. But hey do a torque converter and LSD with a 3.76 or 3.92 diff under it and you will find it goes sideways with the best of them.

gs300, 2j are just so easy to maintain and can take such a beating.

I think they are all the same. The engine is reliable; it's the stuff around it that people get frustrated about like bushings, oil leaks, and suspension noises. I'd go 2001-2005 is you do a 2GS.

with Lexus it is all about scheduled maintenance. if you do the maintenance, the car is very reliable. a Lexus with a lifetime of scheduled maintenance will easily go 300k.

not everyone does the maintenance, especially once you get into the very used market. that's why i'm a big proponent of: no maintenance records, no deal.

therefore, it's car to car.

think of it like girlfriends:

the gs4 is the natural tall, buxom, blonde. she's a head turner wherever she goes. yes, she's higher maintenance, but isn't everything that's higher performance?...to you, she's worth it because you never tire of the way she looks in public or in the bedroom....i mean garage.

the gs3 is the pretty brunette with the tight a**. she's smart, she makes sense, she gets the groceries and looks good doing it, but no matter how much you love her, you can't help but looking at the blonde every time she goes by and wondering if the grass might just be greener with her

While I don't think that comparison is really all that accurate, today I learned that my car life puts my love life to shame.

Bought an '01 GS430 four years ago with 161k miles. Had a $4 piece of hose break. One of the rear door lock actuators sticks so I have to lock it manually sometimes. That's it. Full synthetic oil changes every 5 mo/5000 miles, new tires recently, runs like a beast.

I agree. I have 17 years of maintenance records! Except for an alternator that went out (and I couldn't make it very far), brakes, tires, and oil changes my car is 99% dealer serviced. It's a little more expensive but I have no complaints. At 220k I really have no idea how far this car could go. Let's put it this way: I may find a low mileage SC430 one day as a second car but my GS is not for sale. This car is destined to be a classic.
