Lexus gs300 2002 cel p0444 p0446
Hello everyone. Recently picked up a 2002 Lexus gs300 for 4k the car has over 10k of maintenance invested in it from the previous owner and runs mechanically like a dream. Single owner and she was to old to drive any more. Interior is 9.5/10 black interior and exterior needs some work on fenders and front bumper. Bought this as a family car because I have 3 sc300 2 of which are 5 speeds.
The reason I'm am posting is because less than a week before purchasing the seller claimed cel came on, codes p0444 and p0446 were thrown. She had them read then cleared. shop said it could be the gas cap not tight or making a seal. Upon looking through records it looks as if she had a similar cel experience happen November of 2014 @ 99k miles. O2 sensors were replaced at an outrageously expensive price as well as the charcoal canister. Seems that kept the cel light off for almost 2 years but now I'm at 102k miles and its doing the same thing. The paperwork states these codes relate to fault at fuel Evap control system. The first time it happens almost two years ago they just ra**d her for money 2181$ to do charcoal canister and 02 sensors and did not even do a smoke test. Do you think the charcoal canister could be bad again only 3k miles more and 2 years later? Or should I assume it's a leak in the evap system and just run a simple smoke test at home?

Check ALL your hoses under the hood and make sure they're not loose. She really did get raped on the Charcoal Canister cause when that P0446 code is thrown, it's usually the VCV and that part is $25 ish from rockauto.com. I had the same code and after doing research, bought the part and had it replaced for around $100 for the labor. Shop actually quoted me $500 to replace the charcoal canister too lol.

You might as well search for the gas cap on rockauto as well. Not too much to replace.
I have a 98 GS400.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have already checked all hoses going to air box, I'll check the one by the break cil. And I'll replace the vcv and see what happens! Glad it's such a cheap part to replace. That shop is horrible I don't understand why they replaced all those parts and they charged so much. One invoice was 3500$ for replacing the abs system!!!!
