Talking Funny engine noise- video included! :D

Hey guys! I recently bought my 2000 GS400. I love the car so far, but lately I have noticed an increasingly annoying noise coming from the front of my engine. I am guessing it may be my belt tensioner pulley? If you agree, please advise on how I might remove this myself to replace it. I am somewhat savvy with mechanics and think I should be able to replace it myself. I am afraid to drive the car until it's fixed because the noise is only getting worse each day. Thank you for all your help!

I'm not 100% certain its a pulley making the sound, a pulley usually makes a chirp sound. I'm thinking more possibly failing component internals. You need to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Get a short hose and put one end to your ear and direct the other side to each pulley to see where its actually coming from. Once thats found, remove your belt and move that pulley by hand and distinguish whether the sound is coming from the actual pulley or the component. Personally, it sounds like the alternator (whether you have electrical problems or not).

just my 2 cents

Thanks for the response. I tried using a metal pry bar to locate the sound with not much success. I will try a short hose. If you look at the video again closely, you will see the tensioner pulley appear to have a slack while moving. I also sprayed it with some penetrating oil and the sound went away briefly. I don't know how telling that test was, but maybe it is telling us that the pulley is bad?? As you said, I do not have any electrical problems at this time.

Thanks!

That narrows it down pretty much to the tee LoL replace it and move on

Procedure should be pretty cut and dry.

You could take the serpentine belt off and spin the tensioner pulley by hand to see if it makes noise, although this is similar to the noise mine made when the tensioner pulley was on its way out.
