Best oil for Lexus

The GS calls for a API SL grade or newer like SM or SN...or an mulit level grade of GL-5. Anything less than those specifications is already obsolete by the engineers and may cause engine damage.
On a side note: There is a current lawsuit going on against Dollar General on 10w30 and 10w40 oils they have. The API grade those weights contained obsolete SF graded oil...only meant for cars engineered older than 1988!

its your money, but that is overkill for these newer oils. If you want to get the most out of your oil and money, get an oil analysis done with the oil you prefer at Blackstone Labs, they will be able to tell you a recommended change interval based on your driving and specific engine wear. They send you a free kit and the analysis is around $30.

As for the 3000 mile rule, its a safe rule for the ignorant majority. Many factors are involved when it comes to changing oil including age, tune and engine condition. The best way to know when it needs to be changed is by checking it, visually, by touch and by smell. If a car is burning oil, then obviously 3000 miles isnt gonna cut it. Keep it translucent and your car will love you.

Is there any truth to the commonly repeated line I hear about how switching a car from dino oil to synthetic oil causes leaks?
My '03 430 has had nothing but dino oil for all of its 191,000 miles. I do buy the "high mileage" version of the name brand dino oils, but have always wanted to take advantage of the Mobil 1 pricing at Costco. Amazingly, my car not only doesn't leak oil, but it burns very, very little between oil changes.

I typically just go off the color of the oil around the 3,000 miles mark. Just to be on the safe side as far as keeping the engine running good I just stick to that rule

There are, what, THREE, motor oil threads on the go right now? Is this really necessary?

Amsoil is suppose to be good up to 25,000 at $50-60 per 5 quart jug which would save cost, so instead of changing your oil typically 4-5 times a year you would only need to change it once a year
