Default vvti pulley repair - does timing belt need to be removed?

Hi,
my GS300 has oil leaking from the vvti pulley. I've seen Jeffs video for replacing the O-ring. To remove the vvti pulley, is it sufficient to just loosen the timing belt or does the belt need to be removed? Hopefully the pulley can be removed after the timing belt tensioner taken out.

Thanks

Thanks for that link Frank. Did you take out the timing belt tensioner or just loosen its bolts?

My plan is to loosen the hex bolts on the pulley first, by holding crank still with timing belt still tensioned.
