Took me a month to finish the project between school and free time but its finally done. My goal for this project was to have a clean OEM look, navigation, removable storage for music/movies, and be able to make hands free calling. Here are some pic during the install process.
I had a broken OEM headunit and took it apart to see if I could modify it to fit the nexus 7. To my surprise..it was perfect.
I didn't want to have the nexus to sit flush to the front bezel so I bought a double kit from a civic that let it sit it further back at an angle.
First time working with plastic. All I did was used a cheap soldering iron and melts plastic that was left over from trimming.
I didn't take a close pic of the way I mounted the nexus but you can kinda see the two upper edge with the metal bracket. The module on the left is a delay relay and the piece on the right is a buck converter to step down the voltage to 5v that the nexus required. The nexus turns on when it see 5v when the key on ACC. I delay the nexus to see power for 3 seconds to take into account during engine cranking. I'm powering the nexus using an OTG cable and the usb end extend to the glove compartment to power a usb hub.
This is how I soldered my OTG cable to make it fit into the housing. I'm not really good at soldering let alone soldering these tiny connections but it seems to hold up. The black (-) and brown (+) wire goes to the buck converter for powering the nexus.
I had to trim the housing and bezel on the side for the cable to fit.
I used a computer power supply to get the 12v to bench test everything before the car install.
I'm using a 2nd gen nexus 7 running stock 5.0.2 with Timur's kernel. The major benefit of having this is kernel is that it power down the nexus to deep sleep when it lose power and turns on when it see it. It also allows OTG fast charging while using external usb devices.
Since I have to take out the climate control so I decided to modified it a little bit. I'm not a fan of the green lighting so I changed it to amber.
I had some left over amber film from a previous project so I tested it out.
Next up is the modification of the climate control. I'm going to reverse the display of the icons. Instead of black its going to be white and I'm gonna light it up with amber bulbs.
I peeled off the old polarized film from the lcd display
The top pic would be the same as oem and when the polarized film is turned 180 degree then you get the reversed of the lcd display.
The phone picks up too many colors with the night pic. Only the icons are lid up in amber and everything is a little darker when at night.
Audio from the nexus is sent from the DAC to the sony headunit aux port.
I took apart the cd changer and used the top cover with the oem mounting point and attached the sony headunit on it.
The sony headunit aux is in the front. I wanted to have a cleaner install and plus the glove compartment won't close so I added an aux to the rear of the headunit.
I had a JL sub laying around so this was the perfect time to install it. I wasn't looking for a booming sound system but that little soundstream amp surprised me.
