Default 1198 GS 400 17" Chrome Rims - slow air leak from corrosion

Hi,

I have a 1998 GS 400 with the factory 5 spoke chrome GS 400 rims. I recently put new tires on but they do not seem to maintain air pressure. My mechanic thinks its because the ocean air (live near the beach) is causing corrosion that is pressing against the inner tire and causing a very slow air leak. Have to constantly add air every few weeks to keep them at 32.

I am looking to get new Lexus rims the are not chrome. Would anyone know what other lexus rims are compatible in 17"? Can I use any Lexus 5 lug pattern? I have brand new 245/35R17 Michelin tires that I want to put on the lexus rims.

Thanks

This is a common issue which my GS had with its 17" chrome wheels too. I was able to clean up the wheel where the tire bead sits and then the tires sealed. You can read some threads on it if you are interested by searching the 2GS Forum for "Chrome wheel leak", there is at least 5 threads on the subject.

Most Lexus wheels will bolt right up, some like the RX are a little too narrow though if I remember correctly. Which wheels are you looking at?

Thanks, I will take a look at older threads.

Not sure what other Lexus rims I would consider, I am just going for a clean, factory look and something that will fit perfectly without modifying the car or changing the feel. I have the 17" rim, any suggestions?

Will the 17" ES350 rims fit perfectly? How about the offset?

I bought new tires from Discount Tires, but the passenger rear wheel kept needing air every few days. I took the car back in and was told that the chrome had oxidation due to the chrome getting old. The tech at Discount Tire told me that he had to grind/shave/file off the oxidation because the rubber could not seal.

I did a quick search and found a DIY with pics. I hope this helps.

A reputable shop should be able to clean up the corrosion and either spray or brush on a sealer to stop or slow down the corrosion. Unless you have chunks of chrome missing.
