Default Cleaning engine after leaky valve cover gasket

So After my misfire issues the head gasket leak I had went from barely noticeable to full blown bad. I am replacing the gasket tonight and was wondering what the best route is for cleaning the engine of the gunk that accumulated. Can I spray a degreaser on non-electrical areas and lightly rinse or is it good old fashion elbow grease time?

Bump for an answer as I will be doing the same next week and would love a solution to cleaning the bay after its all done.

P.S Will also be doing a cam rebuild since I'm leaking oil from there as well, doing spark plugs, coil packs, and wires to finish the job off. =)

Simple Green should be come your best friend on this kind of job . Just spray on, let it set for a few mins then clean up with a rag or mini brush in hard to reach areas.

Steer clear of using water, but GeniusGS has the right idea.

+1 on the simple green. Just get a rag you're going to get rid of and spray it on there then rub the oily areas. Works great.

or go to a reputable car wash and get that engine cleaned with some special chemicals they use. They did it to mine and the car looked brand new and nothing happened to it from the chemicals. Its sort of like dry cleaning for your car, cant imagine it hurts the engine there were brand new Benz and BMW's doing it as well.

get yourself a gallon of gasoline, and quite a few wire brushes, carb cleaner, and rags. go at it.

If you have a air compressor, invest in a siphen gun ($20) and spray down with mineral spirits which can be bought at Home Depot. Easiest way, no scrubbing needed just point and blast away. Safe on plastics, rubber. Residue evaps away, its what we use on aircraft engines where I work

I've cleaned two engines using a cleaner called Spray 9, available at auto parts store $6. Just spray it on, let it sit for 5 minutes and hose off with water. No scrubbing, no damage or issues from the water. Also use it to spray my rims and sidewalls for no scrub cleaning.
