Exclamation Help ! 1999 Lexus Gs400

Hi everyone I recently got this Gs400 through my mother where she bought it from a used dealership The car has been great so far but she bought it with 173k miles on it ive easily put 7k so far within 5-6 months of having the gs.

The Check Engine light came on repeatable times taking it back to the lot we got it from they damn' near excuse my language but had the car more than I have, and they told me they changed some wires and a couple other things like the locks that never work. other than this long rant that can go on and on with my bad luck with cars, only my second lexus 'car'

*I Need to get a Full tune up and dont want to go buy the wrong parts to take to the mechanic and was wondering what do I need ?

Also was wondering what could i do to keep my car running smooth and willing to take any other advice from anyone with information about my car or cars in general I NEED TO LEARN MORE thanks - Nick

My advice is read. Read everything about your car that you can, you start with the owners manual, then read everything in the link below.

First off, welcome to Club Lexus this is you #1 stop shop for info on the Lexus. As said above, our FAQ/DIY thread has a plethora of information from maintenance to notorious problems, heres the actual link:

As for a tune up, unless you're having electrical problems in the ignition system, all you really need are plugs and wires. Bad coil packs would give you symptoms, so no real need to change unless you really want to.

Other things to keep it running smooth, maybe look into changing your fuel filter (something common people are changing since our car is getting very old and most likely hasnt been changed and does glorious power adding for the 400) also cleaning your MAF sensor and cleaning out your throttle body is not a bad idea. If theres no record of timing belt being changed, thats another project worth doing for peace of mind.

Welcome to CL! The first thing I would do is findout the code for the CEL. If they didnt tell you simply go to autozone to get it read for free and let us know so we can tell you what the problem is. Depending on what has already been changed by the previous owner you might be able to get away with doing only a few very minor things like spark plugs and motor mounts. I would start with a full fluid change (transmission, power steering, brake, coolant, and oil most importantly), spark plugs, motor mounts, ball joints, tie rods and bushings. Then you can work on the control arms as they are needed and the obvious stuff like brakes/rotors you will only be able to tell their condition by driving or inspecting them.
