Thoughts on high mileage GS300

yeah i wouldn't look at high mileage as a factor. mines sitting at 358k give or take and still runs just fine.
if it's in good condition inside and out, i'd say it's definitely a good deal.
definitely can't find a gs in good condition for $1,200 where I live.

You'd never know the miles were so high just by looking at it and driving it.

I ended up swapping the transmission about 3k-5k miles ago or so just because i had a lower mileage one given to me. Everything else on the car is original besides the mufflers and the coilovers (i currently have D2s on there and swapping for BCs tomorrow.

Lexusdog has hit it on the head. It is incredible how smooth they run at mileages which other premium makes would be on their last legs. It seems my '98 GS is a youngster at 185,000 miles.
I was chatting with the service manager at my local Lexus dealership. They were one of the first to be established in the UK and serve a wide area. He told me that they get GS and LS models in with astounding mileages and the engines use little or no oil and the gearboxes are original. He said that they have never had to change an exhaust except for impact damage.
We all know that door actuators, radiators and suspension joints have a limited life. Even shock absorbers, drive shafts and wheel bearings will wear eventually. So what causes end of life? According to the service manager, eventually the wiring will go as the insulation gets brittle, rots and causes shorts and he has seem this on early models which are otherwise mechically sound.

That is impressive that the engine and tranny held up that long. I think I will continue using synthetic fluids and hope I can get that kind of mileage out of my car. I have turned many people over to the Lexus brand because they can't believe how smooth these cars drive with tons of miles on them.

Believe it or not I just purchased a 00 Platinum Series with 163k for 1,200. I think it was a fair deal even though I did somewhat lowball him. It was in NYC and he had nowhere to put the car along with the basic GS repairs (LBJ's,brakes,tuneup) so he was just trying to get rid of it. Mileage was an issue for me in the beginning but after reading about how long lasting and reliable these cars can be I said whatever I'm going for it lol. The FS sign he had in car before he sold it to me said 2800 obo, he listed it online for 2300. Me = winning ��

Thanks guys. I actually prefer driving this car to my IS300. It just drives much smoother and seems more comfortable. I have already taken multiple people out for a drive in this car and asked them to guess the mileage, they all guessed between 100-130k miles. They were amazed when I told them 221k. I think this car will turn a few more people over to the Lexus brand. Probably not a bad idea for them. 
On a side note, I think the previous owner didn't know this car had a cabin filter. This is what it looked like when I pulled it out the other day. Some of which I had to pile on the top after digging it out. I was quite surprised.
