Default Headlights won't fit factory HID?

Hey all. Current LS400 owner here. I'm going to look at a GS400 tomorrow.

I'm looking at new black headlight housings and almost all of the ones I've found say they won't fit the GS models with factory HID. I'm confused as to what this entails as the headlights look the same. Does it just have to do with the bulbs?

Has to do with a few things, including the bulbs. The HID's have auto-leveling and the aftermarket ones dont have that ability. They physically fit, but thats about it. Can you get them to work on your car? yes. Its just a matter of splicing into the wires going into the factory ballasts and create 2 wires (power and ground) Buy the proper headlight harness that the new headlights require and attach them. thats it.

Its a shame though to do this, its a complete downgrade from the factory. those ebay headlamps (especially the black ones) look very cheap, you're better off opening up the factory ones and giving them a nice gloss or satin finish and hell since you're in there, throw in some REAL hid projectors rather than the ebay halogen projectors.

I have Factory HID's on my 2GS4 and my wife has factory HID's on her 2RX and honestly mine are better overall. I don't have the sharp cutoff and that is what annoys her more. She might have a tad more light close, but mine has a better long range (mine is factory adjusted). I adjusted hers up to help (brings in other issues), but it is still not near as good as the 2GS HID's.

I wouldn't call the 2GS HIDs "good" in any way, shape, or form. Better than some cars, but not good by any means.

I couldn't get rid of my factory hids quick enough, I hated the uneven output on them. Any projector retrofit is a massive upgrade. That being said, I still wouldn't replace them with eBay projector lights, the output is terrible and they just look cheap and tacky imho.

I was looking on ebay, but not for the cheapo projectors and halos. I just wanted a set of our lights that aren't totally chromed out like the OEM. I thought DEPO would surely have some since they did for my Matrix, but they didn't.

Are there any black housing options for GS models with Factory HID at all?
I just hate hate HATE all chrome. And I don't trust myself to bake my headlights open just to paint them.

Some versions of the 2003 SportDesigns have Dark Grey/Gunmetal housings, and then there are the 10th Anniversary Aristo housings that are Black Chrome.

Wow, I looked up pictures and those are nice. Then I tried to look for a set for sale, and can't find jack.
I did find factory HID Aristo headlights with clear lenses for under $400 shipped from Japan.

Also found these bad boys.

I'm actually contemplating it too if this car is as nice as it is in the add. Going to look at it in an hour.

Sportdesigns are not all that common, so to find the headlights for sale will probably not be easy. There are a few vendors on CL that specialize in Sportdesign partouts so you could check with them. aliga is one, don't remember the other but check the classified section for their posts or post a WTB thread there.

Good luck, hope the car is clean!
