Default GS300 and GS430, why same gas mileage ?

I just came across some topics on the forum, some users have stated that GS300 and GS430 have almost the same Fuel consumption. According Fueleconomy website the difference is 1 Mpg.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Power...30&srchtyp=ymm

One has a 3L Engine (V6), the other 4.3 L (V8) engine.
Before I came across few posts, I didn't bother looking at GS430, due to high Gas prices. But if the fuel consumption is the same, why not have more power for the same gas consumption.

Could someone clarify this for me, why such a small difference ? or I am missing something.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Sorry for the Double thread post, moderator please delete the first one.

This is just an educated guess, but the 3.0 inline 6 engine has been around along time and like many older engine designs the efficiency isn't up to par with new engines. That being said, the 3.0 is a fantastic engine and is basically bulletproof. But if you have the choice, go with the 430 for the extra power. However you will likely find there are more 300's for sale out there as the 430 was around $10k extra in cost when the cars sold new.

300 is a less powerful engine with a heavy body, So that kind of cancels out the mpg gains that would come with a 6 over the 8....

Yep. The six cylinder Supra motor was an older design. I had a chance to drive a 1982 Supra/5sp... kinda the grandpa of that motor. I don't think they got that much better mileage, about 18 mpg or so.
Reliable as a wood stove.

When I was shopping around. I drove a 98 GS300. Wow. Couldn't afford it but impressive. Same engine, good on the low end up to 30 mph.

Fast forward two years later and I stumble onto a 02 GS430. And the difference is obvious. I don't mind putting up with the gas mileage.

I don't know about that EPA mileage estimate... I'm not sure how accurate our trip computers are, but when my wife had my GS430, the average always hovered around 23 mpg, and since I took over the car, about 60-40 hwy to city driving, I'm showing 25 mpg. I filled it up Monday morning, went to work and it showed 28mpg, but we had 40mph tail wind, now it's showing 25.6mpg.

I don't have a heavy foot, but I'm not a granny driver either.

Those with 6cyl, what does your trip computer say?

I have never been able to achieve those numbers. I'm lucky to hang around 21 mpg. Most of my driving is on the freeway. Also considering that the car was always rated at 16 city/21 highway.

I think I was a little 'off' when I said '60-40' highway to city ratio. I live in pretty rural area, and our 'city' isn't like stop and go traffic. When I had my ES300, I routinely got over 30mpg.

And on Monday, on my way to work, it was interstate highway that was under construction, I had the car in cruise control at 60mph, so that wasn't a fair calculation. (56 miles on highway and about 4 miles in city, like real city of Chicago city... and again, 40mph tail wind)

But either way, I've always gotten way better mpg than the EPA, even my beater 4Runner, where EPA is 17 and 19, and I get about 20-22 mpg. Now, wife's GX470, she is only getting 12-14mpg. (her foot is way heavier than me)

^ yea, I'm very familiar with Chicago. I was born there and lived there until I was 14. I know the outskirts can be vast and nothing but highway driving. You're getting impressive numbers. Is it me or does it seem like women are driving more aggressive these days?????

I get 14mpg in mine.

Think about it:

2JZ. Less power in a heavier car = you have to mash the gas harder to get the thing going.

3UZ. More torque + more efficient engine = don't have to mash the throttle as much to get the same performance.

I can testify that the 2JZ in a stock 2GS is a bit of a dog. I've never driven a GS430 but I would imagine the experience involves less downshifts and throttle input - which balances out the fuel consumption of larger displacement.

I test drove an 03 300 along with an 03 430 on the same day. There is a big power difference when getting on the 430. City driving was close to the same (sub 35mph). The 2jz has good tq when driving at those speeds so it didn't feel too bad compared to the 430.

I have to admit, I drive more like granny than most of you. Driving the GS, it just does not give me the inspiration to drive aggressively. Too quiet, too soft, etc etc... My wife has 2 speeding tickets in the past 18 months. Me? last time I got a ticket was 1987, so yeah...

I think the magazine specs were like 5.8 seconds to 60 on V8, and 7.2 seconds for the 6.

For some reason, the 430 doesn't feel like it goes 5.8 sec 0-60. Be honest, my old 1986 Mustang 5.0 stock felt much faster than the 430. (it did about 6.5 sec 0-60)

I just visited Sound Performance on Tuesday after work, regarding my Supra issues, maybe next time I'll ask them to dyno my 430. (SP is only 4 miles from my work)
