Don't have to change if you're proactive with your maintenance. I do a drain/fill every 20-25k. My fluid stays red, never brown and my cars shift like butter. Particles are still flowing through it. If it's catching large enough chunks, then you have problems.

I went to do my screen (220k-230k miles) and it was spotless. I talked my friend at Lexus and he said they don't replace screens in them at all. Not a recommended maint item. I can see why.

Drain and fill, call it done.

What I do, is just simply drain and fill every year, maybe 2x in a row if I am really wanting a large % changed. First time though I did it, I drained and filled (and ran) 4 times to get it cleaned out. I use a local manufacturer of fluid, the synthetic is actually gold/clear in color. I can say, red is very nice, when clear it is VERY hard to see it on the stick!

Exactly! That's why i corrected the guy saying that it needed to be changed. A screen is NOT A FILTER.

GM has gone back and forth on them, screens to filters on the THM350's and THM400's.

Screens catch the big stuff. But will never plug up. Filters WILL reduce fluid flow over time. I had one plug up to a point I had slippage. When it did, it came on fairly quickly.

I like screens....

I changed my trans fluid last night, as it was last done at 100K. I am at 155k and it was dark red. I went with the Castrol Transmax and it drives great today. Sharper shifts and more responsive. I am going to put 3k to 5k on it and change it out again.

No reason to wait really, you can change it anytime the fluid has been circulated and get a few more quarts out.

When I went to the clear synthetic fluid in mine, around 4 drain and fills of the red and add back in the clear (golden really) it still had a red tinge to it. But was REALLY getting hard to read on the stick.

Yeah, I know, probably a large waste of fluid, but in my case I am already at 248k miles and still shifts sweet. I had no idea when it was done last.

Or just do a couple quarts of trans fluid everytime the oil is changed....

I am thinking about doing that with the next three oil changes to try and get it as a %, newer and newer. I let the maintenance on this car go a little to long when my wife drove it. Catching up now!

Ah, okay so it is a screen. I wish they would have called it a screen. Nevertheless, I went ahead and ordered a transmission filter/screen that said it came with both gaskets and would fit my GS300. I will swap it out and do a single drain and fill and update with results. I will take pictures if anyone out there would like to see them.

Great, This was what my mechanic told me. He have 25 years working with transmission + his father have more. So, he told me to put on the tranny about 2 a 3,000 miles and change the oil again. But, I know everyone has a different idea about it and I respect that too. Because if that works for you that you think it, for me too.

You need type IV, also it's 4 quarts. Pure two start the car, then pure the other two. Run it and and check the dipstick.
