What kind of oil and filter do you use?
Hey guys, I'm a new GS300 owner and I'm about to do my first oil change. I do my own oil changes and was curious as to what brand of oil and filters everyone uses on their cars? Also, do you guys subscribe to the "change every 3,000 miles" plan or do you do it every 5,000 per Lexus? I'm leaning towards doing every 3,000 just to be safe as my GS is a 2002 with close to 90k. While that isn't a lot of miles, I want to keep this car for 10 years. Will not be doing synthetic and changing every 3,000 as that seems like a waste.
Anyways, I'm interested in your responses--especially long-time GS300 owners with high miles on their cars.

I have a 2GS4 and I run Amsoil 0W20 with Amsoil EaO15 (big filter like Fram PH8A or Motorcraft FL1). I go for largest filter I can. I have a bigger one I might run soon, not sure yet.....
Can't find a reason to run smaller OEM sized filter yet..... Less restriction, left pressure drop across the filter, more capacity.
I do 25k mile oil changes..... 203k miles and runs perfectly.

I have an 01' GS430 bro. Since I've had the car at around 76k miles, I've changed the oil and filter between every 3k-6k miles faithfully. Engine sounds and feels responsive till this day like my first day with it. As far as oil and filter wise, I use Castrol Synthetic Titanium oil and K&N oil filter. Also use K&N air filter if that means anything. No problems whatsoever bro. Hope this helps out.

As long as the oil meets ILSAC GF5 you are good to go. Synthetics have higher temp properties that Dino oils don't have. The black oil is a sign of the oil getting to hot (it will in the rings, that is the high temp spot, upwards of 400-500F). This is why synthetics tend to stay clear oil color longer.
GM dropped the 10W40 and 20W50 from the lineup back in the early 80's (SF oil I think) due to the oil additives being high enough that warranty had problems with sticky rings.
With the clearances on the GS400, I would never run more than a 5W30 oil in the car. 10Wxx I feel is a big no no. People do, but the clearances on the GS400 (98) are tighter than the 2008 LS460. And they run 0W20 in the LS460. My 301 Turbo 80 Trans AM was factory spec'd at 30W over 30F and 10W30 below 30F, and 1500 mile oil change intervals for severe service and 3000 for normal service. The engine was torn down at 60k miles when I melted a piston down and the bearings were very bizzare looking. I ran 20W50 most of the time (changed it weekly for a long time, I had free oil), it was fantastically clean, but it was too thick for it.
I run 0W20 with no issues and very good cold start manners. My friend at Lexus has run 0W20 in his 98-00 ES300 with no issues for the last 2-3 years.
But if you see this chart, my friend at Lexus cannot find any evidence that this is legitimate.

I would look at Amsoil filter, Wix, Toyota (no special order), but avoid Fram and other cheap filters. Most are poorly made and don't have any reason to make any quality filters. If you are into reusable, then a System 1 is a great choice (again, use the big size like a PF8A or FL1), but it doesn't filter as fine as paper, but it has very low restriction so it isn't bypassing near as much.

Amsoil 0W-30 and the Amsoil recommended filter for my wife's 02 SC430. Been running it for 5 years. Change the oil and filter once a year with about 8K miles on it. Great oil and only having to change it once a year is wonderful.
Just bought a Dodge Ram with a V-6 VVT engine. OE oil is 5W-20. The days of 10W-30 and 20W-50 oils are gone.

Off Topic, but I have heard there is 0W5 and 0W10 oils coming. Wonder when the OEM's will take it? Wonder what differences in the engines for it?
