Default How to diagnose a 2jz headgasket

I think the Headgasket is blown on a gs300 I just bought. It has a new radiator the previous owner said it overheats
It didnt overheat on me but Water (water only) is running low and there is bubbling in the reservoir
I can hear a gurgling sound also in the engine bay.
so is it a blown headgasket?
and if so any DIY 2jz headgasket write ups? would help but can probably handle it even if not.

1 - Coolant goes down but, doesn't leak.
2 - Overflow bottle overflows and/or has bubbles in it.
3 - Temp sometimes spikes well over normal then returns to normal.
4 - Rough start and white smoke for the first start of the day. Then it smooths out and the whilte smoke stops.

You might get some or all of the symptoms or might simply be down on power. HG's blow in many different ways.

They have testers that let them look for hydrocarbons in the coolant while the engine is running. If you have that you're looking a blown HG, cracked head or cracked block.

Look around, it might be cheaper to find a replacement motor rather than doing the head gasket.

I saw that you PM'd me, I don't reply to my PM's. Please email me instead.

Anyways to reply to your question.
It sounds like the HG is pretty well blown by your symptoms. I usually go one step further and put a coolant pressure tester on the system to confirm. You pressurize the cooling system and you can pretty easily see where the leak is going.

It seems like the previous owner overheated it badly. After you overheat the engine, even if you replace the radiator, it will still have a damaged headgasket. Also, more than likely the head is warped when the engine gets hot enough to blow the HG. Take the head to a machine shop to get inspected, if it is heavily warped you will need replace the head.

Default 98 gs300 Blown Headgasket Need steps to DIY

The car overheated and wouldn't start back up. My fans were not coming on when engine temp would rise and I had a leak at one of the brass pipes on bottom of radiator. I played roulette and lost. I want to take the head out myself and get it machined. Just wanted to know if anybody had any steps with a particular order or pointers when taking it apart? Diagram would be nice!

If you want a step by step guide, get the Toyota factory service manual. It has all the step by step procedures.

Kinda obvious, but have you tried leak-down tester?
