I already bought the 400 tranny after itoaster and ****-adkt said it could work. so im stuck with it. My mechanic is having trouble getting to torque converter to spin after changing the bell housing. I wan to know some detail about the swap so I jus didn't spend my money on air. or at least some tips that may help me to get it fitted.

The guts are the same, but the bellhousing will have a different bolt pattern for the 1UZ. You should just be able to swap the one from the old transmission.
If I was in your shoes, I'd have the mechanic switch over the front pump (assuming yours isn't bad) and the first clutch pack behind the front pump. I've only done this once though so, take it with a grain of salt. The GS400 and GS300 trannies are quite different internally. The 400 tranny is stronger with more clutches per clutch pack.

I build these transmissions all the time. They aren't really that much different from each other. The pump is the same on both GS3/4.
To get the trans to work with the parts on hand, your mechanic will have to do the following:
1. Swap the input shaft. Remove front pump and swap the input shaft from the GS3 trans in to the GS4 trans. The input shaft should be a direct swap, and then reinstall the GS400 pump back into the trans.
2. Swap the output flange from the GS30 to the GS4 trans.
3. Use the GS300 converter and bell housing. Do not use the GS4 converter/bell.
The other way to do it, which will cost more:
1. Install Supra TT or Aristo TT bell housing onto GS4 trans.
2. Use Supra/Aristo TT converter(higher stall) or GS400 converter(lower stall).
3. The front half of the driveshaft(toward front of car) needs to be swapped out for the GS400 piece.

I consider you an expert on all things Lexus but, I wasn't comfortable sticking the long UZ stator into the short 2J torque converter. I assumed Lexus set the two different lengths for a reason. I suspect that's why the OP's mechanic is having a problem.

Hm, you could be right. I have 7 of these a650e transmissions on the shelf at the moment. I'll go measure the pump to double check. Sometimes Toyota does use different PN for the same thing in different years. Even though the parts are identical, they slap on different PN for some reason.
I might be thinking about the internal pump gear assembly. I've taken them apart and the gears inside the pump are identical and interchangeable on the GS3/4. The snout might be longer as you said. I will double check when I get a chance later.

The internals of the pump are the same. Interesting thing is that the gears for the pump come in different thicknesses. I actually swapped gears in a pump and am now wondering if I F'd up because I didn't measure the thickness first. I didn't realize they were different till I looked at the parts site.

At this point, I'm just hoping I got lucky because the tranny is already in. If I can't make line pressure when it's running, I know where to look.
