last few months there is this problem that when the 'lock' button on the key is pushed, the door locks make a clicking sound, but do not actually fully lock the car, the doors can still be opened. Pushing the 'lock' button a few times in a row makes the locks finally work and the car chirps.

The same goes for unlocking - one need to push the 'unlock' button more than once to get the car unlocked.

I am wondering could this be a battery issue, is this a mechanical problem with the locks or something else?

Any advice/hints would be appreciated!

This horse has been beaten to death already. Search door lock actuator replacement. Depending on how technically inclined you are, you can buy only the motor or the entire assembly.

Thank you for your reply. I did see some references to this, but what really seems strange is that multiple locks misbehave. I would expect them to fail one at a time...
