Ok guys, so I have looked at all the DIY for adding an AUX input to our cars.
Between switches and relays and playing a blank CD, even putting a CD in upside down.

How about a super simple plug in your phone to the AUX jack and have it play.

Here we go.

Step 1: Remove your factory head unit.
Step 2: Take it apart
Step 3: Solder 5 wires to your AUX jack
Step 4: Cut the two traces on the bottom of the AM/FM tuner circuit board shown in the pic below.
Step 5: Solder the 5 wires from the AUX plug to the corresponding numbers in the pic below.
Step 6: Figure out where you want your Aux plug and install it.
Step 7: Put it all back together and your done.

Now all you do is turn on your Radio to FM(your favorite station playing), plug in your phone/Ipod to the AUX plug and PRESTO! the radio is interrupted and your music from your AUX input plays!

Remove the Screws that hold the Front face, top cover, and tuner circuit board.


Unclip the front face and Slide it off.

Solder wires to your plug.


Remove Tuner circuit board by lifting up off pin connector.


Cut Traces with razor blade. Make sure you get all the way through them to interrupt the signal.


These are the places you will be soldering your AUX wires to.


Solder corresponding wires from AUX jack to circuit board.


Put everything back together the way you took it apart and you're done.

I chose to cut and drill the front face and install my AUX jack in the front of my Head unit.


This is not to step on anyone's toes, but my wife drives my car and I needed it to be simple. Plug in the phone and it works. No extra steps, no extra wiring, no upside down CD.

Plus, it also works as a hands free setup for your phone so your calls come through your speakers.

I haven't taken one apart, but I'm sure it would. You just have to look at the AM/FM tuner circuit board to see if it"s the same.

i like your write up but some people dont like to take apart their head unit. i did mine the other way with the and it works perfect. Anyways good effort and write up.

Great write up! I had to take mines apart a couple of months back to replace the factory bulbs to led bulbs. Wish this was here months ago lol. Shouldn't be hard taking it apart again haha

CptCrunch.. I understand that people are afraid to open up the head unit. There are a few reasons I did it this way. 1: Just plug it in and it works, thats it. 2: No cut wires. 3: If I ever sell the car I wont have to explain to the new owner they have to play a blank CD or have one upside down with an error message.

I'm not saying the other ways don't work, all I'm saying is this way there are no extra steps to making it work. Plug it in and play.

good question...I'm more concerned about the cutting...will that damage anything? will we still have the full function of an OEM stereo? good write up anyways, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

pretty cool DIY. so radio works fine and when u plug in AUX, it takes over? how much simpler can it be

The reason cutting the traces is needed is because half of the switch is soldered to one side of the traces that were cut and the other side of the switch is soldered to the other side of the traces.

Example:
Factory goes from point A to B.
How I did it goes A to the switch to B.
Cutting the traces need to be done to shut off the radio when the plug is plugged in.

Everything works normal. All this does is interrupt the AM/FM audio output of the tuner section of the radio. Nothing else is involved. The AUX plug is a normally closed switch. Insert the Headphone plug and it opens, using the headphone plug signal instead of the factory radio's. Take out the plug and the switch closes and the radio comes back on like normal.

Like I said guys... SUPER SIMPLE AND EASY.

Super simple diy! Does anybody know if this will work with the stock nav unit? If so I would like to try this, tired of the crappy quality of my fm transmitter!

I have an 04 non nav HU and on your 4th pic where it shows "Remove by lifting up," I actually don't have that computer board on that tray. I have the board on the back of the face and below the tape deck but not that. Fudge!!! I already started soldering the 1/8 stereo phone jack 5 wires. FML! Am I missing a piece or it's a different HU. Below is a pic of the HU with the face plate off and a pic of my AWESOME soldering skills! J/K!
