Gs400 or Ls400
#16
My GS400 has 240,000 miles on it and still running strong. Just got it less than a month ago but have not done any maintenance. Which ball joints should I worry about more, rear or front? and how will know I if they need to be replaced?

It's always difficult purchasing used cars for me. I like to have as much information as possible. Even with carfax, autocheck, vehiclehistory.gov (nmvtis) and maitenance records, it's important to have someone knowledgeable to look for physical problems that aren't reported.
For example, I went to my Lexus stealership a while back and they had two 2003 ES300 for sale. IIRC, one had 60k and the other 88k miles. The salesman was spewing the same car salesman BS and how Lexus is very stringent in their inspections and only the best of the best stays on their lots. If there were any issues it'd go to auction, blah blah blah. So I look at the 88k mileage one and it was in great condition, with little wear and tear, but nothing a little touch up paint can't fix. Then he tries to show me the 60k mileage one and I immediately noticed the rear bumper was a differen't shade. I told him pop the trunk and inspected it to see that the trunk was indeed repaired (different colored silicone). He said the car has a clear carfax though. What a tool..
Also one thing I've come to accept is "the market dictates the price," not KBB or NADA, unless you're willing to drive for a better price that is. Sometimes taking a road trip can save you $2000, but you'll have to take the risk of buying it without seeing the car, or spend money to see the car just to realize it's not as good as advertised.
I've been looking for a clean ES for my little sister for a very long time so I feel your pain.
