I just replaced the engine. The current one has 83,000. I want it to reflect that and the paper work.

not that good of a reason. The mileage has to reflect the shell's mileage as well.

No it is not legal. You just have to keep documentation of the new engines mileage and the mileage the car was at when installed.

And technically if your cluster goes bad and is replaced, you are supposed to set the mileage to the mileage your old one was at. When a dealership or bodyshop replaces clusters they have it set to the current mileage.

You could likely find some shop to change for you for the right price. Or you could just by a cluster from a junkyard/ebay that has similar mileage to the new engine.

It's not really a huge deal if you do change it or swap cluster as long as you do the right thing when you sell the vehicle you both advertise and sign over the title with the real total mileage on it.

It is legal if your cluster become "inoperable" to adjust to reflect the mileage of the motor and, or the chassis. You need a notary to verify and sign off on what the original odometer reads and what the new one will read. As long as it is documented and the mileage was verified when you adjusted or changed the cluster, it is legal. There is nothing fraudulent about doing this if and when you sell the car because you can still show how many miles are on the car. You will have a legal notarized document to prove everything.

Just did this for my Honda!!! I have a office full of attorney's and work in a court house for a living so I made sure what I said is in fact legal to do!
