Has anyone painted their brown wood to make it look like black wood?

I was thinking of how tail lights are smoked and if it would work well on the brown wood in order to tint it black... but still see the grain of the wood...theoretically making it similar to black wood.

I'm not talking that crap Vans tint spray. I'm talking professionally candy smoke paint and cleared.

I have a couple extra center consoles and wood trim. I may try this, wanted to ask first if it has been done and how it turned out.

If it doesn't work, I would just paint my wood trim Piano Black.

I'm not sure how tinting over it would look, but I would love to see it done... It might turn out nice, but I'm kinda thinking to tint it dark enough to eliminate the brown it would also really lessen the woodgrain effect dramatically??

I've mentioned in a previous thread about Hydrocoating water transfer becoming very popular, there are a few places around me that are doing this now, and you can choose from 1000's of patterns, woodgrains, and various effects. A local stereo shop has been using this process for it's fiberglassed tv bezels and speaker trim panels. A friend of mine had the wood protion of a steering wheel and some console pieces done in a black wood style and it looks like real wood.. The quality is defiantly there, it ain't no vinyl or fake carbon fiber type process..

Here is one of the places that does in my state.

And here is a random pic from someone's GS interior they did.

is there anywhere you can just buy a full woodgrain kit as pictured above, but in black wood?

Also, what is the pricing for the hydro paint as pictured above?

hydro dipping is not cheap. Factory "wood" is not wood, its hydro dipped. There are do it yourself kits available now for dipping but you have to source the blackwood pattern which is the hardest part.

The first part of the question confuses me? Do you mean as in 'real' wood?

As for pricing my friends steering wheel I think was like $130 or so, which I didn't think was too bad. But surely all those pieces above has to be $1000 or more, which I still wouldn't think is all that bad of a price... The parts I've seen in person looked just as quality as oem..

I had my wood wheel water transfer as well, Wringo referred me to this site:

http://www.classictrimwtp.com/

Here is wringo's interior

Their work is excellent. I sent them some stock blackwood piece to match and they did their thing.

The hydro dipped Blackwood posted by 99 GS3 above is mine. And wringo's interior above is what inspired me to do it. I was searching for the sport design black wood but was turned off by the expensive price of only a few pieces. Then found out some friends started source hydrographics so decided to get more than just the door and center piece done.

On the lexus it is about as real as the sherwood stick on kits that everyone calls fake. They both use a thin slice of wood .010 thick if even that, but yes they are wood.

Haha I remember this topic YEARS ago about if it was real wood and some member took off a piece and sanded the clear all the way down to the wood lol
