Has anyone tried painting brown wood to look like black wood?

I already have a Sport Blackwood steering wheel. So I want the wood to match it...or i leave the steering wheel wood and do the wood pieces piano black.

I contacted Source Hydro and I am planning on sending them my pieces today. I want the OEM look, so this is a much better solution than painting or tinting IMHO. I like to do things right the first time.

I 'smoked' my wood back in... '05? We added a black candy to clear coat to darken the wood.
The desired effect wasn't to make it black, although with enough coats you could get there. Unless you made it almost opaque, you would likely still see some wood/brown tone, however.

OK,
I just spent 3 minutes sanding this piece of door trim with 100 grit sandpaper.
There was a nice thick layer of clear coat over the surface. Once I sanded therough the clear coat, Bingo ! , I hit raw wood.
I continued to sand the wood surfiace for a couple more minutes to verify that it would not wear off like a simulated pattern would. If I continued to sand, I'm sure I would go right through the veneer and hit the plastic backing.
There you have it folks !
