01 L-Tuned GS300 - Steering wheel shaking on Highway at 60mph
I have an L-Tuned 01 GS300 with 75,000 miles on it. I've noticed something felt a little loose in the front end quite some time back but it wasn't severe and I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
Anyway, on the highway today when I got up to 60mph the steering wheel started shaking violently. It went away when I dropped down to around 40mph, and then a few minutes later felt ok again around 60mph, but there is clearly something either loose or broken in the front end. The shaking feels a little worse when I turn the wheel to the left, so not sure if that means its a driver side problem?
I do some work on cars but not the greatest at diagnostics unless there's something obviously broken when I jack it up. Any thoughts on what I should check? Anything commonly go on these cars in the front end around 75k?

pretty common for 2GS to have steering wheel shake. Could be worn out steering rack bushings to other worn out parts.
i found a quick remedy (though not a perm fix) was to tighten the steering rack.. theres a hex looking thing on your steering rack that you can adjust. a simple unlock the lock rink and tighten the lex part maybe quarter - half turn removed 90% of my steering wheel shakes.
the other 10% is prolly due to my warn out steering rack bushings.. been waiting on figs to release their full metal ones but they havent yet. i might have to roll the dice on TM Engineering to get poly ones or maybe just go through sewell for replacement ones

1. make sure the tires are properly inflated and tread is good
2. balance the wheels
3. Daizen steering rack bushing
4. Check alighment
I used to have minor vibration, I did Daizen steering and sway bushings at once, also had my wheels balance, drop the car and did an alighment. All is well now and the car feels tighter.

I don't believe it's the tires. This thing was shaking so hard I slowed down to 40mph on the highway because it felt similar to a flat tire.
I can feel play in the front end when I am driving so I truly think there is something loose up there.
Where are the rack bushings located? I will check the ball joints as soon as I get a chance to jack it up.

The rack bushing is on your steering rack, It is a cheap repalcement (under $40) and takes less than an hour to replace, I would also look into doing the ball joint and caster arm if you have not done so. This got rid for most if not all of my vibration, the last bit left is a slight bend in one of my rims from a pot hole.

its your engine mounts that need to be replaced. This will eliminate the 60+ mph vibration.

The wheels are the original OZ Salinas with the L-Tuned. They are a bit banged up, but I don't think this was a wheel issue. I'd like to check the steering rack nut if I can find it. Anyone have a pic? Is the steering rack under the hood behind the engine or in the car? I do feel some play in the wheel when I turn it when the car is in idle.

Update. So I am on the highway yesterday and again all of a sudden the wheel is shaking like crazy around 50-60mph. So I slowed down a bit and it went away after about 45 seconds. Then after that no problem even at 75mph.
I havent had a chance to jack it up yet. But does random shaking that comes and goes away sound like rack bushings? I would think if it was ball joints, alignment or a wheel it wouldnt come and go like that.
