Default Cannot Shift the Auto Trans Selector

Hello all,

I have a 99 gs 300 with about 130k miles on it. A couple weeks back after driving around town for and hour or so I arrived back home, and attempted to put my car in PARK, well the shift gear would not go past NEUTRAL...it would shift from D > N and any other shifts below Drive. I kept trying to make the shifter go from N > R and it wouldn't budge...it was like it was locked....so i pull out the manual and it said in the event i cannot shift the selector even though the break pedal is depressed, i would have to use the SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE BUTTON...so i looked up the instructions...and it showed were the shift lock override button was and now I have to depress this lock button EVERY time i need to switch from PARK to DRIVE and visa versa...there are no check engine or any other warning lights showing giving me hints to check something..I just went for an oil change yesterday and they say transmission fluid is actually good. Can someone please hlep me...Im scared to take it to a lexus shop were i ask for them to take a look at it i end not being able to get the car back without having to pay like 2k in repairs!! Does anyone know if this would be just a minor repair or is a whole new transmission needed????

First of all, your stop lights need to work for shift lock to operate normally. If your stop lights don't work - check your pedal switch. If they do work, you're probably better off with the lexus shop. And no, this has nothing to do with the transmission, it's the shift lock solenoid you're looking for.

When u say stop lights, im assuming you mean the break lights correct?? if so...i do have a back break light that is out, but it has been out long before this issue of me not being able to change shifts occured......Im happy to know this has nothing to do with the transmission...i guess this is all electrical correct??? I tried changing the break light myself but its too much unscrewing and takin metal parts out..so im going to just send it to a shop and have them take it apart and i guess they'll check this issue thats causing me to use the shift lock override....again...i pray this is a minor thing and wont cost me more than a couple hundred....

thanks for your response and help.!

Could it be the Nuetral Safety Switch on the side of the tranny needs adjusted/lubed? Mine will do this sometimes in cold weather. I will just get under car.... and I cant remember correctly but I think I shoved the long rod attached to the NSS linkage forward/to the front and all has been good for a while. There is some play in mine(linkage) so I dont Know if this will help or not. Worth a shot though I suppose. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN/IF U DO THIS!!! Wheels chocked,E brake,etc...You can very easily shift the car into Nuetral by doing this and if you are on ramps and car rolls backwards!!!! Well, you know that cant be good for anyone..Dont ask me how I know that..I used one of my 9 kitty lives that day.

there is a fuse on the lower drivers side. it says STOP i believe its 15A. if blown it will lock the safety lock on the shifter.

soooooooooo... i just ran into this problem yesterday. my brake lights work, STOP fuse is not blown. I have to manually push in the shift lock button above the shifter to get it into/out of PARK and REVERSE. Correct me if I am wrong or if you may have any suggestions, should i narrow the problem to the shift lock control ecu? or would the key lock solenoid or the stop light switch be possibly part of the problem? would there be something else that i might have overlooked? I searched the old forums and google with the same problem, but I have yet to find a definite solution that I can go by. Suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Sometimes a fuse may not look blown, when in fact, it is. Good luck man. Change the fuse and see if it fixes your issue.

Test the shift lock ECU... it's right next to your cup holder.
