Default Headlight Specs

Hi guys.

Recently been pulled up by the police regarding how bright my lights are. These lights were in when I bought it so I have no idea what they actually are.

The officer was certain that my 2001 2nd series GS300 did not come factory with HIDs, but I think that was a change between series one and series two correct? He also questioned me on its self-leveling ability.

Also what was the stock bulb if anyone knows? The officer says 55w is the highest legal wattage allowed in a street car.

So yeah, just to clarify a bit of confusion, 2001 GS300, stock HIDs yes or no, self leveling yes or no, and whats the stock bulb meant to be?

Thanks.

I have 2000 GS430 and it had stock HID's. So I'd think GS300 would have them too.
Autolevel system is mandatory with HID systems.

Stock bulb for HID is D2R. R for Reflector. I think stock bulb for halogen is 9006.

Edit: Here's some more info (just googled it):

Hmm yes, there's a bit of info there, thanks for the link, however I don't think it really answers my question. Maybe i'm just dense but I didn't understand their explanation for projector vs. HID bowl.

Thanks for the bulb reference!

Based on that thread the GS300 has had an option of factory HID's.

You obviously have factory halogens, so you'd have to change your bulbs to 9006 halogens or change your headlights (you could just change the reflector bowl) to HID ones if you want xenons.
IF you decide to go for HID lights then you'd have to have the autolevel system also. Or atleast in Europe you do, I don't know about US laws, they're often more loose than EU laws.

So to your guestions; stock HID yes, stock autolevel yes, stock bulb 9006/D2R depending whether you have HID's or halogens.

HID's were an option in 2001.. IF you have that little piece in front of the bulb that spreads the beam then you have HID.....

55w 4300k is stock...

You sure about that? I reckon I had 35W. It could be they were changed to 35W though.

I'm still confused, we'll put that down the the fact i'm slow.

Here's some quick snaps I took of the light and its bowl. Hopefully you can tell me whether it's stock HID or a stock halogen system. I don't want one more than the other, I just want to put back the correct bulb whatever it is so I don't get inconvenienced by the boys in blue again.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it.

I can't tell from those pics. Both HID and halogens use reflector bowl and to my knowledge both has those little bowls in front of the bulb to reflect the light to the reflector bowl and from there to the road.

Edit: When you start your car does it adjust the lights automatically vertically?

should be pretty obvious to tell apart HID and halogen simply by looking at the output. Pop up your hood and open the headlight connector. If there is a ballast, then it's HID. If simply a bulb, then halogen.

If you were referring to HID output, stock is 4300k. Should be clear white.

Easiest way to check is to turn on your headlights facing a wall or garage at night. If the color changes within the first second or two, you have HID's. To answer your question, HID was an option. If you turn on your headlamps, it will point down and adjust back up when you start them. Hence the Auto-leveling headlamps HID system.

55 watt is stock really? I changed my bulbs out to 35 watt and had no clue, so I can put 55 watt in? There's no way stock is 55 watt...
Op here's the easiest way to tell, pop the hood, open up the gray cap on the headlight, look inside and if u have a silvery REAL THICK mesh type wire in there with a connector to the bulb directly then bingo u have HID ...

Here's the bulb

As someone mentioned, autoleveling feature would be a pretty obvious indicator that you have factory HID. Though you have to start the car while the light switch is in the on or auto postion for it to level. It won't level if the car is already running and you turn the headlights on. Also, if your leveling motor is bad they won't level at all.

HID bulbs for our cars is D2R and require a ballast to power them up. Since your asking these questions, you probably don't know what a ballast looks like. This link will give you an idea.

http://factoryxenon.com/shop/oem-99-...-computer-ecu/

For factory HID, the easiest thing to identify in the engine bay is probably going to be the connector leading up to the bulb. If it looks like the one in the linked pic, you have an HID setup.

If all else fails, simply watching how your lights behave when turned on will tell you a lot as well.

When turned On:

HID - Brillant initial Flash of light followed by a steady increase in output intensity till warmed up.

Halogen - Light comes on and remains the same level of intensity

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think maybe I have worded my question badly. I know I have an HID bulb in my car, as I was told when I bought it, but I didn't know if I had HID headlights, i.e. self leveling etc.

I will check for those ballasts! Cheers mate.
