Won't shift into gear

Won't shift into gear
I took the center console out along with the climate controls, stereo and clock to swap radios.
Now when I press on the brake and put the shifter into gear it won't budge until I push the little paddle on the shifter down. I was looking on the right side and see two white piece move (one in a up and down motion and one in a twisting motion.
In order to engage into drive from park or park to reverse and all the combos in between I have to press the little paddle down.
I did a search on shifters sticking but came up with a hand full but didn't find anything that really answered my questions.
Does anyone know what this could be?
