Question

Guys:

What do you'all use to clean engine and all other under the hood parts of your cars?

I will be competing and going to car shows this spring/summer and would like to make it look good/respectable under the hood.

I have heard WB-40 is good. Could this be true?

Anything else?

thanks.

Default ...try steam cleaning

I steam clean my engine compartment once in a while at detailing shops. My result is that the compartment looks almost brand new.

Question

A number of years ago the consensus was that frequent steam cleaning of the engine compartment was bad for some of the non-metal components (belts, hoses, wiring insulation, battery, etc.).

Since then I've avoided steam cleaning though I can understand why someone showing their car would want to do it.

I'm wondering if this is still valid, if it's an old wives tale, if new compounds for plastics have improved to the point where it's not an issue...

Anybody have any facts on whether steam cleaning is detrimental or beneficial to the under hood pieces?

Marty

Thumbs up ***Steaming or just spraying***

Based on my experience and professional detailers, either steaming or the tried & true engine degreaser with mild soap & rinse pressure are both fine with moderation. My previous cars including my GS4 all get either or about once every 3 months. I have not seen or heard, (from the service guys) any problems whatsoever. In fact, it's good practice.
