Camshaft issue!!!! =[
Hi guys,
I have a GS3 and today my mechanics were changing my timing belt, serpentine belt, camshaft seals, crankshaft seals, and water pump. Half way thru they called me and told me an issue came up. They said who ever did my timing belt last time tighten my driver side camshaft gear nut too tight and they cannot loosen it. An on top of that the camshaft seal is going bad so its leaking oil . Would I have to swap out my whole camshaft then??? And does anyone how much it will cost me approx?
Thanks!

Tell them to get 'creative' to get the damn nut off... surely where there's a will there's a way... they can put the belt back on and that will enable them to lock down the motor so nothing spins while they put the torque to the nut..... crapsman makes a 'damaged nut' socket thing that will dig into the apparently now rounded off nut and there's no way that that, combined with an air impact wrench won't put enough torque/impact to break that nut loose.... I'd be worried about my choice of mechanics if I was informed of such.....

Which camshaft is it that they are having problems with? The intake or exhaust side? If it's the intake, make sure they remove the VVTi cam cover first before they can access the bolt to remove the camshaft itself. I guess these guys have never worked on the 2JZ motor before because if they remove the valve cover itself, they will see a section on the camshaft where you can slide a adjustable wrench over to hold the camshaft in place while you break the nut loose. It's only 60 ft./lbs. so not much torque there. Hope this helps.

Nope. Replace the head worst case.
He said drivers side, so it is intake.

i had the same problem taking that hex bolt out on the vvti cam, i strippexd it cuz it was on there really tight.i ended up drilling it out. but yea your mechanic will just have to be creative its all part of being a mechanic.also mine was leaking through the vvti pulley so i had to order a new one, there is a seal inside the vvti pulley as well.

If you've already got a good air compressor, then an impact gun will only cost you maybe $200 for a reliable one.
Keep in mind that the listed torque for an impact gun is overrated for practically all brands. What's 1000ftlbs isn't really 1000ftlbs. I've sold all my big boy impact guns and now I'm left with a dinky Kobalt impact that does almost anything my other guns did, except it only cost me $25 at the time
