I was told by my stealership that I needed to change both of my cats.. 1200 each when my Check Engine light came on.. I went home jacked the car up.. got under it and felt air pushing thru the bolts on the cat.. I opended it up and the gasket was in pieces.. went back to Lexus, bought the 2 gaskets for $12 each.. put them in Check Engine light is gone.. car is quieter and I havent had any problems since.. check that..

I dont' mean to hijack, but I'm going to...I've been hearing what sounds like the rattle inside of a spray paint canister at times from under my car (01 GS300), is that indictive of a cat going bad. No CEL lights (or rotten egg smell) yet, just curious. If that isn't enough info, let me know and I can do some more research on my own. I guess I'm just curious as to what other symptoms lead up to a "bad" cat.

Well I check for air leaks but didn't find any. It's been several days and a lot of driving and the engine light has not on again.
The mechanic also told me to run regular gas through the system that it may clear it up. I do know it did clear up the problem with my tach almost bottoming out in the morning. I was running premiem and the mechanic said it may not be atomizing the gas the correct way which could cause both of these problems.
Hopefully I killed 2 birds with 1 stone...saving $$ at the pump and no CEL!!

Okay guys, time to chime in... Sorry to bite off you here but I may be in the same boat too...
For the guys who bought the aftermarket cats, what brand/partnumber/price did you pay... I know someone said that they paid 1/4 of dealer cat but a figure will help.
Also, what is the length of the cat, is it 13.25"? I know the inlet/outlet is 2 1/4"...
It is for a GS400
thanks in advance...

In the front, it could be the ceramic element in the cat that's coming loose. In the middle or back, it could be a part in a muffler/resonator coming loose (perforated tube or something).
You should go under your car and start knocking lightly on the exhaust on different spots. You should be able to reproduce the rattling sound like that.

I had Sonnie at Dynamic Auto put my header on my 01 GS3 and no CEL problems ever! All my O2 sensors are connected and the car runs fine.

heres pics:
Here's everything before the surgery ...
After a little cutting action ...
And finally the replacement, all custom ...
It only cost me $50 to have the shop do it! What do you think?

Po430 code fix. I battled this for a month and came up with a good cheap fix. I had the po430 code on a 2002 IS300. The cheap fix is to tie both of the bank 1 & 2 sensor 2 input wires at the ecu to the bank one sensor 2 output at the ecu. I used one gold plated butt splice connector at the ecu plug. You must leave both sensors and wiring in place good or bad for the heater load and bank one o2 sensor 2 must be good. You can find the pin out wiring diagram online at o2simulator.com. I feel as though it is a design flaw that everyone over 100K will have to deal with. You can spend thousands on cats and o2's and labor or a 20 cent butt splice connector. Hope this helps everyone.

i would 100% go with a dealership one over an aftermarket one, but sometimes like Aristo8 said it could be an exhaust leak causing it. more than likely your cats are clogged and bad though, have your dealer do a cat test to see if its actually going bad that way its on record, btw bank 1&2 are the same one pipe so your getting both actually you cant get them seperate
