I use a bike rack that mounts on the back... the drawback is that you better not need anything from the trunk while the bike(s) are on there. Unless there is some secret way that our rear seats fold down that I haven't discovered yet..
You know, you remind me I've got a Yakima SST roof rack I used on my old Camry and when I got my GS in 1999 I went and purchased the right clips for it to go on my GS.
If you're not in a hurry (pretty busy for next few weeks) and if you'll pay for the actual postage (and box if I have to buy one) I'll give it to you. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find most of the parts and you might have to figure out which ones go on the GS and which were for the Camry. I don't think I ever put it on the GS other than one test fit, so they may still be in plastic.
I've read a few threads on it on a 2gs, didnt look too bad. Plus a hitch rack would produce as much wind noise as a roof rack.
Actually, a hitch bike rack produces absolutely ZERO wind noise that can be heard by car occupants.
A roof bike rack can produce a LOT of wind roar at highway speeds.
I used roof bike racks (Prealpina and Yakama) before I switched to a hitch bike rack when I bought my first Lexus LS in 1990 and immediately had a receiver hitch installed on it so I could pull my utility trailer. I'm using the same cheap bike rack on my 2000 LS400 and I doubt if I will ever use a roof bike rack again.
Hitch racks have many advantages other that no wind noise. Even my 5 foot wife can put her bike on the hitch rack and there is no worry about damaging the roof. No worry about driving into a garage forgetting that the bikes are on top. Hitch racks makes a great stand for doing bike repairs.
I bought the hitch for my 00 LS on-line from etrailer in Wentzville, MO -- best prices I could find. They have one for a 2GS and other Lexus cars and SUVs.
Don't worry about the "shame" of having a hitch on your GS. Lexus dealers in most other countries sell hitches for the GS.
