Question need new tires for GS400

hey everybody,

can anyone suggest a decent set of tires for my '98 GS400?
i could just get the same sets i'm on (stock?), bridgestone potenza RE030 235/45ZR17, but i really don't know ANYTHING about tires and i'm hoping some of you can shed some light for me. the potenzas also seem a little pricey but i also assume they're pretty good tires. if i'm not a speed freak, do i really need the top performance tires? anyways, it just seems like there are so many to choose from and i'd trust owners before i'd trust dealers.

thanks again!

Default Check tirerack

I got a set of Pirelli P7000 Supersports for mine...no complaints. You should stay with the manufacturer's original speed rating, but if it's not your bag, then no you don't need to get Pirelli PZero Rosso's, or Michelin Pilot Sports. I would stick with reputable names and at least an all season performance tire. The tire rack has really good info on what you need and some reasonably good rating systems.

Default Toyo FZ4 & Falken Ziex

I'm running Toyo's FZ4 which is a "z" rated tire, all-season aggressive looking tread design, 300 tread wear rating and seems to be relatively quite on the road.

My driving habits are a couple of fast "squirts" a day with a couple of twisties thrown in at 70% of max. I expect to get about 30,000-35,000 miles from these tires.

In Atlanta, they run about $115 per tire (235/45/17).

Another seemingly "good" alternative I've seen (being the penny pinching chump that I am), is the Falken Ziex. Pretty much the same specs as above but I've seen the price on-line as low $100 tire.

Sears carries Falken and their website states they will match any on-line retailer's price.

Good Luck,

DO NOT...I REPEAT, DO NOT GET ANOTHER SET OF THE POS RE030 POTENZAS!!
They are among the worst tires ever put on the planet. Be thankful you are getting rid of them.

For a good balance of handling and comfort I'd recommend either the Michelin XGT-Z4s or the Toyo TS-1 (not sure this is the exact name). The Falkens are inexpensive, but hard and don't offer the handling.

You can go to a 245, but you'll have a bit higher sidewall that will not respond as well as the same tire in a 235.

I think the best place to get tires and at a GREAT price is www.discounttiredirect.com I have bought tires from them at least 4 times, right now I think they are running free ship. Michelin Pilot XGT's seem to be a great choice, I've had them on my vehicles and they run great, handle and wear terrific. Remember tires are probably the most important part of your car.
