Default did Lexus lie?

my dads 02 GS300 was making a knocking noise in the front left suspension whenever he would go over a minor bump slowly and there was a scraping niose coming from the left front brake. so he brought it to the service department. they look at it. they hand him a paper that says he has $5,200 worth of damage. Lexus said there was a crack and a leak in a coolant resevoir, he needed all the brakes replaced, front bushings replaced, new struts which are $2,200, and some other things. due to the economic problems, he didnt want to pay that much. so he brought it to a local foreign car shop. the mechanic there said he still had 50% brake life on both rear brakes and that he didnt even need new struts. he also said there was no crack and no leak. as much as i hate to think it, did Lexus lie? or do they just simply want their customers cars perfect in accordance to their "Pursuit of Perfection"?

Your dad was smart to get a second opinion.

normally when it comes to a major job like that, i would ask to go inside the shop and take a look at what theyre talking about. I work at a dealership and people ask to look at exactly what the recommended repairs are, that way the customer can see what the problem is.

with the economy the way it is, most dealerships offer a free inspection if you get an oil change. take the recommendations, ask to see exactly what theyre talking about and then its your choice to have them fix it or take it somewhere else. happens to me all the time at work.

Sounds like they tried to set your dad up for a major rip off. Struts do not cost anywhere near $2200 to replace. I would have your dad take his car to another shop just to be on the safe side, hopefully one a friend/family member recommends as being an honest place and then document everything they said. If it turns out that the Lexus dealership was going to rip him off and make him over pay for things that did not need to be fixed then call Lexus Corporate and report them and ask if they are aware of this practice. I would then go see the manager of that Lexus dealership and show him what the other 2 shops documented compared to what they said and make it clear that is unacceptable and dirty business and you want to know why they were going to steal from and rip off your dad.

i no right? and my purchase of my SC300 in november was the 4th Lexus we have bought from that dealership. we have not had any other issues like this in the past. closest to it was about 2 months ago when i discovered my heat didnt work full time, they looked at it and said it would be $700 to fix and i only had it for about 40 days and i didnt break it. so we told them "this was our 4th Lexus from your dealership and if i have to pay this it will be our last" and they gave in and fixed it for free. but this time it was ridiculous
