my mechanic did the timing belt and a few other little things for $200 labor only. Unfortunately I didn't do the water pump and now it's leaking.

Funny this thread came up because I just got clarification today from the previous owner of my 98 GS4 that the timing belt was not done. Called Longo Lexus in So. cal and was quoted $950 for timing belt, tensioner, cam seals and water pump. As a bonus they would give me a Lexus loaner car. I then called an independent shop in Montclair called ToyTech (toyota/lexus specialist) and a Rick quoted me $587 including labor for timing belt, tensioners, and cam seals. If he noticed any evidence of the water pump failing, it would be an additional $180. Further, he said the likely hood of it needing a water pump was rare as he typically sees them go 250-300k miles before failing which sound to good to be true. Anyway, I will probably get the work done from ToyTech not just because of what Rick quoted me but that he sounded knowledgable and straightfoward. Maybe I can get it done cheaper but I'll have the peace of mind knowing a Toy/Lex mechanic did the work.

the water pump is peace of mind, its worth it for the $180 and they do fail far quicker than that. I wish I had done mine when I had the 90k service. I didnt because it looked fine, and now about 18k miles later it is leaking, not bad, but enough that I need it done. So while they can get to it you might as well do it. I now have to pay more labor to have it done.

I went to Mazz Motorsports in San Gabriel. My gf changed her timing belt, water pump, oil change, tranny flush, rear diff flush for $600 on her IS300. They do good work and they use OEM parts!

just last week i had to redo a starter job on a 99gs400...cost the guy an extra $1000 because he wanted to try and save $300...you get what you pay for boys...i see it all day long...unfortunatly it takes a bad experience before some people come around...in the long run, your car will be better off at your local dealer....and you will be money ahead...your local mechanics cut corners to cut costs...who needs to re-torque axle shafts or control arms?..."there just fine"....stuff like that that doesnt get done from the local shops...the difference? see me after 150,000 miles and compare cars...mine at 202,000 and new one at 142,000 drive like brand new...not a creak...not a sound...dealer maintained since new...there is a difference...i see cars with 100,000 miles that are junk! may look good....but drive like crap...all depends on what you want...i love my gs430...and even if i quit working for lexus...it will always be dealer maintained...the extra cost is worth it.

um my mechanic doesnt cut NE corners....sounds like you got some lazy shops around you. i save so much $$$ by not going to my dealer since i found a mechanic i like/trust/friends with (been with him since 1998) no complaints/no problems. but for the most part if you dont have a good mechanic your right it would be better off at the dealer

I just picked up my car from Accurate Auto in Montclair (So.Cal). I paid a total of $669 and had the timing belt, belt tensioner, timing belt idler, water pump, inlet gasket, crankshaft seal, water pump seal, thermostat o-ring,new antifreeze and a new radiator cap. The owner's name is Mario and they specialize in Toyota's/Lexus's and Honda's/Acura's. Mario even gave me a loaner car while he did the work. I have to say I was impressed with how the facility looked and how I was treated. Even though I work at an Acura dealership and know the value of taking your car to a dealership, I felt I was in good hands.
