Default Shifter Plate Letters and Numbers

I have no idea what this is called, making it impossible to do a search.

I was wondering if the letters and numbers are supposed to be illuminated? Mine are not and have never been since owning this car....since Sept of 2008.

If they are how hard is it to change the bulb? What kind of bulb does it take?

I think its a #74 bulb. Easy to replace.

1) wrap a large flat head screw driver in electrical tape.
2)open your center console.
3)open your cigarette lighter then pull out the cigarette lighter assembly, there are clips holding it in, pul straight out.
4)unplug the harness to the cigarette lighter.(assembly will be out now)
5) pryup gently under your ect switch and vsc switch.
6) unplug the seat heater switch, vsc switch and ect switch, the plugs will be accessable after you pry it up.
7) pull the center console straight back and lift it over the shifter ****, you can unscrew the shifter **** if necessary.
8)CAREFULLY pry up the cover over that has the shifter letters on, you'll see the bulb underneath.
9)replace the bulb.

You can put a nice white T5 led in if you want other wise a regular #74 bulb will work.

Good luck. go slow and be careful wood trim cost a grip.

Wait a minute...

Are you guys sure that there is suppose to be illumination underneath the shifter console? I have a 02' GS430 and I don't believe there is illumination, the letters and numbers seem to be stickers?

there is illumination, you should be able to see each letter/number light up
If your too scared to remove all that centre console to change the bulb, i guess you don't really need to look down at the shift console as there is a shift gauge on the dash so you know what gear you're in.
