Well I've always had a short ram intake in my 99 gs300. But I came up with the great idea of buying two 45 degree elbows to extend and bring the filter further out towards the back of the headlights. Well when I did that I've been getting a P0171 code. (Bank one sensor one reads engine running too lean) I changed my o2 sensor and my MAF. Which neither was bad. Came to find out that neither was bad. So I changed the intake back to the short ram and Check engine light went away. So I'm guessing if you were to do something in that nature you would have to get a piggy back for your ecu? Like how SRT has one?

I'm not very good with these questions, but it seems you identified the problem and corrected it . So it would seem you answered your own question and I typed a bunch of words

I was wondering if I was correct or was I wrong? Because I have the short ram right now and no CEL, but if I extend it out CEL comes on...so what is the big differnce between the two and will it get corrected by a piggyback like SRT's?

I want to say air/fuel ratio would be wrong without some sort of adjustment.

That is a wild guess

it has to do with the pressure on the incoming air. I had a similar setup on my 99 maxima and it effed it all up severely. i forgot the exact term but its similar to the backpressure in an exhaust.

You have too much air going in. You need to use an aftermarket computer to tune your air fuel mix so you are not running lean.
