Default Air Bag - 10yr maint.

Just noticed this today on my 98 GS400.
Anyone know what this costs or entails?

Thanks,

I'd check my manual as to what needs to be done but my car's in the bodyshop...if it's free from the dealership, I'm getting it done .

Man, I'm happy you posted this. I'll be hitting up my dealership tomorrow and posting what they say over here.

Wow.... I've never bothered to read that before. I didn't know airbags expire? Well, within a reasonable time limit that is.

I read it too. I guess they check the sensors, etc. I dont know anyone who actually has had this done. I myself have owned many ten+yr old cars and never had this done. Who wants to be the guinea pig and get it done???

Isn't the airbag a safety item/issue? Shouldn't they test it for free? Kind of like if your seatbelts don't roll up on their own anymore it's a safety issue.

What needs to be checked, will the dealer check for free?

seat belts not rolling up isn't free since the seat belt still does work.

anyone know for sure this is free?

When I had my civic, it used to be a common problem with older belts not rolling up anymore, and it's a sign that the spring or whatever rolls the belt back up is failing. Since that part is failing, there is a chance the belt will not lock in an accident, causing the seatbelts not to do their jobs. SO....yeah, it was free.

I don't know about the air bags though, but I would consult lexus.

hmmm...there was a thread about seatbelts not retracting and someone said Lexus wouldnt fix it under the safety thing since the seatbelt does still work; just doesn' retract. Which sucks b/c my seatbelt on both of my Toyotas are doing this.

So no one this service done?

The only maintainence for the airbag would be just a simple check with the dealer computer scanner and a visual check. Its not a big deal. In very rare cases, the airbag or its sensors/wiring would need to be replaced. I have performed this myself for many cars and had never replaced an airbag or its components. If your airbag light is not on you should have no worries.
