Default Headlight restoration kit, with pics!

So i spoke with my MOC dealer at my dealership and he mentioned that he had a headlight restoration kit on his truck. So he gave me one, to try it out and see how well it works. Basically, you use this liquid and 400 grit sandpaper, then up to 1000 grit, then finally 2000 grit. With the 400 grit, you take off the top layer of plastic that is oxidized, and the 1000 grit and 2000 grit is to take the related scratches off. You then hit it with an alcohol wipe to clean the surface and get off any contaminates. Finally, you get a brush and some UV clear coat, and you evenly cover the surface of the light. Everything is included in the kit, even gloves! haha. Here is a progression of what my lights started out to be, then ended up as... not perfect, but definately better than what it was!

Sorry for the pics.. camera phone.. eh.

Damn, what was wrong with your headlights before? They looked really bad.

honestly great job but you could have gotten the same results two ways.

1. meguiar's plastx with a buffer
2. wet sand anr reclear - this IMO is the best for the buck.

keep us updated on the results and how long it lasts.

hey Ryan, Looks good but yeah I use the NOVUS#1 polish and works like a charm. It comes back though perhaps yours is more permanent. BTW how did the emblems work out for you???

I have used Plastx a million times... and the yellow comes back every single time. I have also used a bunch of different waxes, compounds, etc... nothing works. the headlights were too far gone.

I have also done the wetsand thing.. and was going to clear them, but didnt really have the time or the effort to pull my bumper, give the headlights to a friend of mine for sanding and clearing. this was cheap, easy, and super quick. This is exactly what you say in #2.. its a wetsanding, and the final coat is a clear coat varnish.

Joe, the emblems worked out great! Thank you again!

This kit was about $30 bucks.. i dont think anything better can be had for that cheap. Im very happy with the result.

great job, I also havent had much luck with plastx, it works ok but is far from great. Im going to try the 2000 grit sandpaper first and hope this helps my situation.

Looks 100x better!

I've used plastx many times and no matter what it still comes back. It'll look good for about a day or two but that's it.

What is the name of the company that makes this kit?

The reason why the headlights start hazing out very quickly soon after re-polishing is because you sanded away the hardcoat. These headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate(bulletproof glass) which come with a UV hardcoating to prevent oxidation(hazing/yellowing). The kit that RTGS400 used includes a coating to prevent the lights from re-oxidation. I'm not sure if it's a very high grade optical coating or not. Only time will tell if it will hold up, but either way it's much better than just rebuffing and not recoating it at all.
