Got pulled over for my tint
The cop let me off with a warning though, but i'm thinking about getting the tint taken out. When he measured it the front window was 16.xx percent and the rear was a little darker than that.
He told me that a legal tint is 70% in NYC, which i find it hard to believe that i'm that much off it. Is this really the legal limit for NYC and what's a good percentage to tint hte windows so that they still look a little dark but legal?

Every state has it's own laws regarding tint so you need to check with your local DMV or police. I know Alaska's max tint is 30% front side windows, anything except mirrored tint is allowed for the back windows and nothing on the windsheild.

You can tint the rear window and rear passenger windows as dark as you want them but the two front side windows have to allow 70% of light in, so 30% is as dark as you can legally go. Alot of it has to do with your interior color. If you tint the back at 5% it will make the interior of the car seem darker. 70% is pretty light so it's not a matter of what looks 'legal', if they want to pull you over, they will. My fronts are at 50% and while that still looks light, my interior is black so it looks darker than what it is.

So 70% is the total for both windows. Meaning that i can have each window at 35%. When I tinted them i told the guy to make sure it wasn't illegal but to make it as dark as possible. Now i gotta see if they remove it without charging me.

No. What that means is that you windows have to allow 70% of the light trhough, at each window. There is no adding or subtracting. That's the two front, the two imediatly behind the the driver, and then from there you can go as dark as you like.

if you want to go by the book, you should also factor in the amount of tint (barely noticable) that comes OEM from the factory. I forget what the number usually is, but putting aftermarket stuff on top of your glass combines the filtration %. At least thats what the state hog told me the last time I got pulled over .....and HELL NO I didnt take it off. Just paid the fine and left it on.

Some cars are already at 70% light transmittance from the factory. So if you put any tint on them at all, they're going to be illegal. I used to have an Eclipse and a cop metered my windows once, and the fronts were 69% completely stock.

I think you guys are reading it wrong. The percentage of the tint is how much light the film is letting into the car. So if the legal amount is 70% that doesn't mean you can put film that's 30% because it's only allowing 30% of light into the car. I live in NJ and I have 35% tint all around on my car because I have a black on black. It doesn't look too dark, I think it looks just right for this car.

I have 35% tint on all windows (including the entire windshield) and have only had one issue (cop stopped me for a bs violation - crossing yellow line) then while standing there he noticed the windshield.

Here is a good guide to go by. Most factory side window tints are about 70% to 78% light tranmittance. I think my 01 GS was around 72% when I tested it years ago. The Higher number the lighter the lighter tnt. The law means total light transmitance . So that is factory glass + tint film = Total light transmittance.
What ever the tint film is rated at is, multiply it by the window percent. example; Window 75% tint film 35% = 26.2% ( 75x.35= 26.25)
