GS400 audio question
Before this gets moved to the audio section... i already made a post there and got no answer... So here is my question... I have a 98 GS400, with NAV, so its the pioneer system... i got my answer on what size speakers the car has, 4 inch front and rear doors, my question now is, can i simply replace those speakers with new aftermarket speakers? Will it sound better than the stockers? In the future, i plan on adding an amp, and bypassing the stock amp.. but for now, i have some leftover eclipse speakers from a previous vehicle, that i can put into this car... is it worth it? And will the 4 inch speakers just bolt right up? Thanks guys!

4 inchers should bolt right up. But if i were in your shoes go buy some 1/2 inch mdf or wood and make you own mounts and put in larger speakers. i put dls compnent speakers in my gs400 6.5 front and rear if i would do it again I would have probably went with 5.25 in the front cause its a very tight fit with the windows.

if you have eclipse 4' speakers then i don't see the problem in putting them in.. especially if you have the pioneer speakers.
do you happen to have the NAK or ML system on yours?

putting in an aftermarket amp will be a bit difficult. you're best off replacing all the unit at the same time.
Not entirely sure if the Nav system works the same as the regular Pioneer system, but the head unit and the amp are completely integrated with the base Pioneer system. The amp is actually what puts out all the front, rear, left, right and sub signals. So you'd end up running line level converters or buying amps that allow high level inputs and leaving the stock amp in place.
As far as speakers go, if the old speakers are the same size as the new speakers, there should be no issues with mounting them in place. But 4" speakers are rather small. I'd personally recomment stepping up to something a little larger.

Thanks guys.. i went ahead and yanked off my door panels, and started removing the 4 inch speakers in the front doors.. (wow, what cheap paper speakers!)... i went to grab my leftover eclipse speakers in the garage and found that i actually had two sets of eclipses.. one set of 4", and one set of 5 1/4"... (they came out of my 95 M3 when i sold it)... So... i attempted to fit the 5 1/4 into the same baffle, and with a little rigging, and a little trimming, it fit! So i threw the other set of 4" speakers in the rear doors.. and buttoned it all back up.. man, it does sound a little clearer.. but now i think the front door tweeters are overpowered.. (the stock 4 inch speaker has a resister on it, that feeds the tweeter)... so ill have to get some bass-blockers or something to settle those tweeters down a bit... otherwise, im pretty happy with the way it sounds! My next step is an amp and a sub or two... then ill get working on amplifying the speakers i just installed... thanks for your help guys!
